Welcome to the Norfolk State University NROTC Program
About Us
Welcome to the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) at Norfolk State University, a proud member of the Hampton Roads Consortium, which also includes Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Regent University, and Tidewater Community College. As part of one of the largest NROTC units in the nation, we offer students the opportunity to develop leadership skills, earn their commission as officers in the United States Navy or Marine Corps, and participate in a rich tradition of service.
Our strategic location near the world's largest naval base allows unparalleled access to resources, mentorship, and hands-on training, fostering a unique environment for growth and learning. Whether your path leads to the bridge of a warship, the cockpit of a jet, or the leadership of a Marine unit, Norfolk State's NROTC prepares you for the challenges of a dynamic military career.
Program Highlights
As a Midshipman at Norfolk State University, you will be immersed in a rigorous program designed to build character, physical readiness, and a deep understanding of naval traditions. Our program includes:
- Leadership Development: Weekly leadership labs, mentoring from active-duty officers, and opportunities to lead within the unit prepare you for the responsibilities of a commissioned officer.
- Physical Training: Engage in physical fitness sessions 2-3 times a week, designed to maintain the standards required for Navy and Marine Corps officers. Midshipmen are expected to demonstrate physical endurance and meet fitness standards throughout their training.
- Naval Science Courses: The NROTC curriculum includes a series of Naval Science classes covering naval operations, navigation, ethics, leadership, and maritime strategy, taught by active-duty instructors.
- Summer Training Opportunities: Each summer, Midshipmen participate in training cruises, such as embarking aboard Navy warships, conducting amphibious operations, or learning aviation fundamentals. These experiences provide a real-world look into the life and responsibilities of Navy and Marine Corps officers.
Why Choose NROTC at Norfolk State?
- Full-Tuition Scholarships: NROTC scholarships cover full tuition and mandatory fees, along with a monthly stipend ranging from $250 to $400. Textbook allowances are also provided, helping to ease the financial burden of college.
- Guaranteed Career Path: Upon successful completion of the program, Midshipmen are commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps, starting their careers with a guaranteed leadership position in the world's most powerful naval force.
- Professional Development: Our program offers opportunities to interact with senior military leaders, participate in local Navy events, and develop skills that extend beyond the classroom, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management.
- Community and Camaraderie: Build lifelong bonds with your fellow Midshipmen, Marines, and Sailors through joint training, service projects, and social events. The NROTC unit becomes a family, offering support and encouragement throughout your academic journey.
