Program Mission

The Computer Engineering Technology program prepares graduates for careers in maintaining, manufacturing integration and support of computer systems. Emphasis is placed on job skills required of professionals in the computer industry, including wireless systems, electronic interfacing, networking; digital communications, oral and written communication, and management principles.

Program Outcomes

The Computer Engineering Technology program provides for student achievement of the following outcomes:

  • Graduates will be able to demonstrate professional communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team in an engeering technological environment.
  • Graduates will be able to demonstrate knowledge of electronics theory, principles, and software tools as the basis for problem solving in designing, building, simulating, troubleshooting, and decision-making for digital logic and analog circuits.
  • Graduates will have ability to demonstrate entry level proficiency in applying circuit design software in designing and testing circuits.
  • Graduates will have ability to integrate knowledge of science, mathematics, and computer applications appropriate to workplace functions responsibilities and employer expectations.
  • Graduates will be able to integrate knowledge of project management and tools for technological, Computer Engineering Technology practice.
  • Graduates will have ability to employ global technologies to address social, economic and environmental issues.

Program Competenticies

Students completing the Computer Engineering Technology program will master the following competencies:

  • 1.1 Demonstrate the ability to write and present technical documents using appropriate visual materials.
  • 1.2 Prepare a professional presentation for a senior project.
  • 2.1 Demonstrate proficiency in the design, use, management and operation of computer networks and digital communications systems.
  • 2.2 Apply the principles and applications of software tools, together with problem solving in designing and trouble-shooting digital and analog circuits.
  • 3.1 Design, build, simulate and troubleshoot various digital logic circuits making use of modern software tools and data sheets.
  • 3.2 Design, build, simulate and, troubleshoot analog electronics circuits.
  • 3.3 Resolve PC hardware and software issues.
  • 3.4 Use C++ programming language syntax and semantics in transforming algorithms into code.
  • 3.5 Design microcontroller software and hardware systems.
  • 3.6 Operate general purpose test equipment using standard testing procedures.
  • 4.1 Demonstrate scientific reasoning, quantitative thinking and critical thinking in solving technical problems.
  • 4.2 Demonstrate competency in applying CAD software.
  • 5.1 Demonstrate effective project team work in planning, organizing, creating, executing, monitoring and controlling activities through final project completion via software and Gantt charts.
  • 5.2 Operate general purpose test equipment using standard testing procedures.
  • 6.1 Demonstrate an awareness of professional growth and commitment in addressing social, economic and environmental issues.
  • 6.2 Demonstrate ethical behavior and responsibility.
  • 6.3 Identify workplace safety issues, reporting requirements and problem solutions relating to people, materials, equipment, methods, and environment.

The methods used to assess student learning and advance students through the Computer Engineering Technology program include, but are not limited to, the following:

Student Performance

This program requires 120 credit hours to complete matriculation. The student retention rate for Fall 2017 through Fall 2018 was 59.3%. The six year student graduation rate is 53%. The average GPA is 2.81. The average years to complete the degree is 5.5 years. 

Average Salary

Students graduating from the Computer Engineering Technology Program reported a starting salary range from $50k–$70k in annual pay. Average salary calculated is $57,000.

Internship: Students obtained Internship with Rushmere Community Development Corp., Fort Eustis, Stafford Technologies LLC., Alion Science & Technology, DHS Summer Research Team Program for Minority Serving Institutions, and the Experimac, Richmond, VA.

Certificate: Student obtained/passed The CompTia Security Plus Certificate, and Army ROTC; 3-year scholarship.

Scholarship: Students received $1,000 Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship.

Further Study: Graduates pursuing Masters of Science, Computer Science, Norfolk State University.
