Legion Wows World with Parade Performance
They came. They performed. They amazed.
The Norfolk State University Spartan Legion Marching Band left a trail of dropped jaws worldwide as they performed in the 134th Tournament of Roses Parade Tues., Jan. 2 in Pasadena California. An estimated crowd of 800,000 was projected to watch the parade live with millions watching the broadcast worldwide.
The 200-plus member band amazed parade watchers on site and at home as they unleashed their unmistakable sound, musicality and showmanship down the parade’s famous Colorado Boulevard.
NSU alumni, friends, faculty and staff attending the parade cheered with shouts of “Behold the Green and Gold” from the stands as the band strutted their stuff.
The Legion arrived in California on Thurs., Dec. 29, and participated as one of nine bands in the Rose Parade’s annual Bandfest on Dec. 30. On Dec. 31, the band wowed the crowds in Disneyland with a march down Main Street in the “Happiest Place on Earth.”
“I can’t tell you how impressed and how proud I am of the Spartan Legion,” NSU President Javaune Adams-Gaston, Ph.D., said after viewing the band’s parade performance from the stands. “They have been spectacular. They have been a showcase for what can be in this country, and I’m so, so proud of them.”
