    • First-Time Freshmen/Transfer, & New Graduates:  January 12th and 13th.
    • Returning Students:  January 13th-16th.

    COVID-19 Testing Registration and Scheduling

    • All students assigned for housing will receive an email pertaining to their COVID-19 registration and scheduling information to their NSU email inbox.

    COVID-19 Testing Requirement for Spring 2022

    All NSU students will be administered a COVID19 nasal swab test upon arrival to campus. The test must be completed prior to check-in to your residential community or attending in-person classes. For convenience, each student’s testing date will coincide with the scheduled move-in date and time.

    Due to the increase of COVID-19 cases and the presence of the omicron variant, NSU has taken steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on campus. These steps include changing the dates for move-in. Move-in is now scheduled to begin on January 12-13, 2022 from 8:30 a.m.- 4:45 p.m. for New Students and Spartan Suites residents. Returning Students will be able to move in on January 13-16, 2022 from 8:30 a.m.- 4:45 p.m. All residents can move in immediately after being tested for COVID-19. Walk-In testing will be available on January 16, 2022.

    To sign up for your scheduled test date, select your respective sign-up link below. Residents who previously signed up must sign up again. The sign-up links will close on January 7, 2022 at 5 p.m., EST.

    New Students/Spartan Suites (January 12-13, 2022):

    Students who return to campus after testing ends at 4:45 p.m. on January 16, 2022, will be required to present a Negative COVID-19 test upon check-in. The off-campus COVID-19 test must be taken up to 72 hours prior to returning to campus.

Frequently Asked Questions About Student Housing at NSU

  • Can I change my COVID testing time/ date due to inclement weather?

    If your travel plans have changed, you can be tested on campus for COVID as a "walk-in" from 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 13th; Saturday, January 15th, or Sunday, January 16th. "Walk-ins" are for NSU students who have to reschedule their COVID test time/ date or did not meet the deadline to sign up to take their on-campus COVID test.

  • What if I arrive to campus after testing ends and I missed my appointment?

    If you know you will miss your scheduled COVID testing appointment, contact us at or 757-823-8407 to let us know. When you arrive to campus, you will check-in at the front desk of your residence hall and take a rapid test. The next day you will be able to take the COVID PCR test at the L. Douglass Wilder Performing Arts Theatre.


  • I am a freshman. Do I have to live on campus?

    Research shows that students who live on campus perform better academically than students who live off campus. At NSU, research also shows that first-year students who live on campus outperform first-year students who live off campus. Like many other colleges and universities across the country, NSU has implemented a mandatory housing requirement for all first-time, first-year freshmen. This mandatory housing initiative is designed to increase retention efforts from the first-year to the second year and to assist students with persistence to graduation. There are exceptions to this requirement. Students who desire to “opt-out” of living on campus during the first-year must complete and submit the Request for Exemption to the Mandatory Housing Requirement Form by July 1 (fall semester) or November 1 (spring semester).   • Where is the main office located?

  • Are there single rooms available?

    The Office of Housing and Residence Life is committed to assisting students who need special accommodations and are registered through OASIS. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any other requests for single accommodations at this time. Students who reside in Spartan Suites will have a single bedroom however, the space may be located in 2 or 4 bedroom units.

  • How can I cancel my housing assignment?

    Students who are assigned housing but wish to cancel their housing or move-out of their assigned space if already on campus, are required to complete the Housing Contract Cancellation Form. Depending on the date you choose to cancel your housing, you may incur additional fees. Please be sure to read the terms of your Housing Contract prior to submitting the form to our office. To cancel your student housing, please complete the Housing Contract Cancellation Form.

  • When is the last date to change my meal plan?

    All requests for meal plan changes must occur prior to the start of classes each semester.

  • Does the University provide insurance for students' belongings?

    NSU does not provide insurance for students’ personal belongings. The University is not responsible for theft or loss of property, or damage to any student’s personal property from any cause whatsoever. We strongly recommend that all students have renter’s insurance. For more information on renter’s insurance, please click Why Should I Purchase Renter’s Insurance?

  • Do the residence halls close during the breaks?

    All residence halls (except Spartan Suites) will close at 12:00pm on Wednesday, November 24th until 10:00am on Sunday, November 28th for the Thanksgiving Holiday Break. For the Winter Break, all residence halls will close at 7:00 pm on Friday, December 10th. Students who are participating in Commencement will have until 3:00pm on Saturday, December 11th to check out of the residence hall.

Contacting Your Roommate(s)

  • When Will I Receive Roommate Information?

    Students who allow roommate sharing information can check the NSU Housing Portal ("THD") to find out how to contact their roommate(s).  Access to this information will be available after July 1.

    If your roommate has agreed, we can share their NSU email. Unfortunately, if they do not elect to share, we will not be able to provide you with this information.

Renter's Insurance

  • Why Should I Purchase Renter’s Insurance?

    The Office of Housing and Residence Life is committed to providing students with a safe and secure living and learning environment. However, the University is not responsible for theft or loss of property, or damage to any student’s personal property from any cause whatsoever. We know that students are likely to bring expensive items to college such as laptop computers, smart phones, game consoles, textbooks, clothing, and other items. We strongly recommend that all students have renter’s insurance. Renter’s insurance can provide valuable protection should your personal items be stolen or damaged under the guidelines of your policy. Renter’s insurance can also help protect you financially should you unintentionally cause damage to your belongings or other property or become legally liable for bodily injury to others within your residential community.

    If your parents have homeowners insurance or renter’s insurance, it’s possible that their coverage will extend to you if you live on campus. In some cases, this may be automatic. If you are not covered or if you want additional coverage, please take advantage of a renter’s insurance (also known as “dorm insurance”) plan with low rates (~$10-$20/month) and that tailors to college students. 

  • How Do I Find More Information About Renter’s Insurance?

    Check with your parents’ homeowners or renter's insurance policy to see if you are covered before purchasing renters insurance. While we do not recommend any insurance carrier, below is a list of a few insurance carriers to get you started:

    Documentation of required vaccines is very important and expected to be sent to the Spartan Health Center at least two (2) weeks before your classes start. 

    **Important Note: Students who have not submitted the e-Health Assessment Form sent from the Spartan Health Center prior to arrival at the Check-In Center will be required to complete the form prior to receiving a key to check-in to their room.

Mail Services

  • Student Mail Information

    University Mail Services is located in the Student Services Center, Room 103 on Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm. Students must live in an NSU residence hall to receive a mailbox. Please provide your Spartan Card to receive a mailbox.

  • Package Deliveries

    Packages are delivered or sent to Central Warehouse on campus (located in the Facilities Management Annex behind the tennis courts). Students will receive an email from Central Warehouse when a package has been received.

Parking Services

  • Freshmen Parking Information

    Freshmen are not allowed cars on campus. Exceptions may be made for students who need a vehicle for employment and/or medical purposes. Freshmen requests for an exception to have a vehicle on campus must be submitted to the Dean of Students Office. The office is located in Suite 307 in the Student Services Center.   • SpartanCard ID

    Your Spartan ID Card serves as your official NSU student ID. This Card allows you access to your residence hall, meal plan dining options, and access to designated student activities. Students should carry their NSU Spartan ID Card at all times while on campus.

Linen Package/Care Package Information

  • Information

    All students who live on campus are automatically members of the NSU Residence Hall Association (RHA), an organization committed to shared governance between student housing administrators and residents. For more information on RHA, please visit: NSU RHA.

    RHA sponsors a linen and care package program for students. The linens fit our Twin XL or XXL beds and a percentage of proceeds benefit RHA programs and activities. For more information on our linen and care package program, please visit: OCM.

    • Reach out to your roommate to coordinate who will be bringing specific items to prevent over-crowding your space (it’s okay if you each want your own TV or fridge but stick to the size restrictions).

  • Parking Upon Arrival to Campus

    Parking decals and/or permits are not required on Move-In Day. Please follow the signs for check-in when you arrive; do not park on sidewalks, in the grass or in handicapped spaces (unless you have a permit).

Checking-In to Your Assigned Residential Community and Room

  • Checking-In

    Students who are cleared to check-in at their assigned residential community will receive their key and given access to their designated residence hall.

  • Who can help me move in?

    Check-in at your assigned residential community will be limited to the resident and no more than two other individuals.

Maintenance Request Information/Fix-It!

  • Move-In Room Condition Report

    Upon check-in, residents will receive a Room Condition Report form to be completed and submitted to their Resident Director within 24 hours of arrival.

  • I’m moving in and I have a maintenance issue

    Residents who note a maintenance issue in their room during check-in should contact the front desk of their assigned residential community for immediate assistance. Facilities Management will have staff available to assist students with outstanding maintenance and repair issues during check-in. After move-in, students should submit a Fix-It! Form to HRL via the Housing Portal. We will forward the request for Facilities Management to conduct the repairs.

Meal Plans

  • Meal plan information

    Residents' meal plans are designed to accommodate the various needs of students. Students have the option of eating up to 19 meals on campus each week through use of their NSU SpartanCard. Each time a meal is used, it is subtracted from your weekly balance. Meals do not carry over from week to week and meal plans are reset every Sunday night. *Only Spartan Suites residents are permitted to have a Meal Plan 7. *First-time Freshmen are not permitted to have a Block 130/ 160 Meal Plan.

Health/Safety Information

  • Who can access my residential community?

    All NSU residential communities are locked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Exceptions may be made during peak times such as move-in at the start of the semester and move-out at the end of the semester. Your SpartanCard will allow you access to your residential community only during your stay. Your card will be deactivated during University breaks.

  • What safety measures will be in place to promote a safe, healthy and clean living and learning environment?

    All students returning to campus will be expected to engage in protective personal behaviors, including physical distancing to minimize the risks of exposure to coronavirus (COVID19). 

    Cleaning Expectations

    Community bathrooms are located on each floor in the traditional residence halls. These areas will receive cleaning services aligned with local, state, and federal safety and health guidelines to create and maintain safe, clean and healthy residential communities. Community bathrooms will be cleaned and sanitized three times a day and revisited throughout the day as needed. 

    Guidance for Residence Hall Community Spaces

    Elevators. To promote physical distancing, you are encouraged to ride the elevator solo or with a limited number of people, or use the stairs whenever possible. If you are using the elevator, wear your face covering and avoid touching the elevator buttons with your exposed hand/fingers, if possible. Be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol upon departing the elevator.

    Stairwells and Hallways. Use of stairwells and hallways should be used for travel and not to congregate with others. Individuals using stairwells and hallways should be wearing face coverings at all times on campus (other than your room) and remain at least 6 feet away from others whenever possible in common areas, including stairwells and hallways.

    Laundry Room Usage. Residents using laundry services in the residential communities and Spartan Station Mini-mall should maintain 6 feet of physical distancing expectations and adhere to the signage displaying hours of operation and usage expectations.

    Residential Security. The residence halls are monitored by front desk staff employed by the Office of Housing and Residence Life (HRL). Each community has a Residence Hall Director, Front Desk Assistants, Resident Assistants (RAs) and work-study students who also work for HRL. Additionally, security patrols are conducted by law enforcement personnel employed by University Police. Doors are locked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and access is given to students through their Spartan Card.

Meet Your RA!

Your Resident Assistant (RA) will be one of the first people you meet upon arrival to your floor. RAs are students are your peers. Students just like you who work to create a warm, welcoming living and learning environment by building community, providing passive and active programs, and being available to serve you during your residency on their assigned floor. Because they are also students, your RA is an excellent resource and can provide helpful tips and friendly advice. Got a maintenance issue? Your RA can submit a request for you (or teach you how to submit one yourself) and help maintain safety in the community by adhering to hall security protocols. RAs report to the Residence Hall Director. They work with an Area Coordinator and the Associate Director for Residence Life to help make your residential experience a rewarding and enjoyable one! 

Living with Roommates

  • What Should I Do If My Roommate and I Do Not Get Along?

    College can be both a rewarding and a stressful experience. Adapting to a new roommate can be challenging at times because each student is unique with different backgrounds, lifestyles, and beliefs. We can learn from our differences and sometimes, all it takes is compromise from each student. Working through roommate conflict and conflict with members of your community is an important part of the residential living and learning experience because it is an opportunity to improve your conflict resolution skills.

    Your Resident Assistant (RA) is an invaluable resource in the conflict resolution process. They are trained to help mediate and resolve conflict that typically arises in a college residential environment. Your RA will help you develop a plan to address the problem or provide mediation. This process typically resolves most issues. If further assistance is needed, residents should seek the assistance of their Residence Hall Director, a professional staff member responsible for all administrative and operational duties within an assigned residential community. Requests to change rooms are honored if the residents’ and staff’s best efforts to resolve the conflict are unsuccessful and more suitable accommodations are available. Residents requesting a room change must receive approval from their Resident Director prior to moving to another space. Additionally, the resident moving must complete all paperwork to complete the room transfer process, turn in their key, update their Blue Card, and ensure they have removed all of their personal belongings upon move-out.

    Any student who experiences intimidation or behavior which interferes with the community-based values (respect, acceptance, civility, etc.) or any behavior which attempts to force a roommate to be removed from the room or prevent a new student from moving into a room, or that is disruptive in any residential community, is prohibited. Residents who are experiencing major conflict involving physical contact or threatening behavior should contact University Police immediately at (757) 823-8102 (non-emergency) or (757) 823-9000 (emergencies). Residents may also contact the front desk staff of their assigned residence hall or the hall where the incident occurred to complete and submit an Incident Report.

Residence Hall Association

All students who live on campus are automatically members of the Residence Hall Association (RHA). Students may actively serve RHA at the hall, area or campus-wide levels. This is a great opportunity to get involved on campus, help plan exciting campus events, and gain amazing leadership skills. RHA is led by student representatives from residential community, an executive board, and RHA president. Elections or nominations to serve in a leadership capacity will take place early in the Spring 2022 semester.

Laundry Facilities

Convenient laundry services are available in each residential community at no cost to students enrolled each semester. Laundry services are also available in the Spartan Station Laundromat. Students using laundry services should pay close attention to your laundry and change out clothing in a timely manner.
