A First-Year Learning Community

The Spartan Emerging Leaders Learning Community aims to support students in engaging with theoretical frameworks that encourage self-authorship, leadership development, and social change. Participants will take part in both curriculum-based and co-curricular activities to promote student engagement, a sense of belonging, as well as advocacy.

Spartan Emerging Leaders Learning Community participants will:

  • Enhance and develop their leadership potential.
  • Participate in exploratory leadership practices and be able to select their preferred leadership style.
  • Be able to articulate, with understanding, why & how their particular leadership style is preferred.
  • Learn to articulate their practical skills and tools effectively on a resume, in a portfolio, and in interviews. 

Leadership Learning Community Goals:

  • To foster a sense of belonging among students in the community.
  • Engage students in theoretical frameworks which support self-authorship, leadership development, and social change.
  • Provide students with early career exploration, service-learning/civic engagement, and undergraduate research opportunities.
  • Provide academic support, co-curricular activities, and other resources to assist University efforts to increase retention

Courses:

  • Fall SEM 101 
  • Spring SEM 102 

Requirements: Students who are interested must register for the Learning Communities sections of Spartan Seminar (SEM) 101 and 102. Participation in Spartan Emerging Leaders Learning Community events and activities, as well as scheduled co-curricular Learning Communities events and activities, is mandatory for those in the Spartan Emerging Leaders Learning Community.
