2018 OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

Cybersecurity Residential Summer Camp
The Computer Science Department held a one week Cybersecurity residential Summer Camp  for 56 High School students from throughout the state of Virginia. This one week summer camp was coordinated by Dr. Cheryl Hinds of the Computer Science Department and  sponsored by GearUp and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). The camp was held from July 8 - 13, 2018.

8 Week Summer internship
Dr. Jonathan Graham and Dr. Cheryl Hinds facilitated an 8 week Summer internship for students from Voorhees College, Benedict College, Claflin University, South Carolina State University The University of the Virgin Islands and Norfolk State University. The students worked in groups on several digital forensics projects as detailed below.  In addition, students developed a virtual machine network, learnt Python and Linux as a part of a professional development seminar. The internship ran from May 30th until July 20th.

2017 OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

STEM4Girls Workshop
Dr. Cheryl Hinds, Assistant Professor of the Computer Science Department taught two sessions at the STEM4Girls workshop which was held at The Advanced Technology Center in Virginia Beach and hosted by the American Association for University Women in March 2017 The title of the workshop session was " Steganography: The Art of Hiding Messages in Plain Sight" The workshop was attended by middle school girls from the Hampton Roads area.

The 2017 CASE Workshop: Cyber Psychology | June 7, 2017
The Center of Excellence in Cyber Security (COE-CS) hosted the second Cyber Analysis Simulation Environment (CASE-V) Workshop on June 7-8, 2017, and was held at Norfolk State University. The workshop provided a platform for researchers and practitioners from academia, government and industry to discuss current advances in cyberpsychology research and education. The workshop provided a forum centered upon the need to advance science of security to generate/adapt psychology/criminology theories/models to cybersecurity.

2016 OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

Community Outreach: Virginia Cyber Camp
Cyber Camp was held Jul 11 - Aug 5, 2016 at City of Portsmouth Public Schools, and was sponsored by Commonwealth of Virginia.

GENCYBER Summer Camp
The Information Assurance Research Education and Development Institute (IA-REDI) at Norfolk State University hosted a two week GenCyber Cybersecurity summer camp for High School Students from July 5th to July 15th on the NSU Campus.  GenCyber is jointly sponsored by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The goal of this program is to increase Cybersecurity awareness among high school students and introduce them to Cybersecurity professions. 

Cybersecurity Summer Academy
Norfolk State University's Information Assurance Research Education and Development Institute (IAREDI) hosted a one-week Cybersecurity summer academy, generously sponsored by the Department of Energy, commencing on June 20, 2016. Designed for high school students, the program aimed to heighten awareness of Cybersecurity issues and introduce participants to potential careers in the field. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to address the shortage of Cybersecurity professionals in the United States workforce.

Colloquium for Information Security Education
The Colloquium for Information Security Education (CISSE) took place from June 13 to 15 in Philadelphia, PA, bringing together leading experts and educators from across the globe to discuss the latest advancements and challenges in information security education and research.

COE Cybersecurity Faculty Training Workshop 2016
NSU's Center of Excellence (COE) in Cybersecurity hosted a comprehensive week-long faculty training workshop starting on June 2, 2016. Participants included faculty from various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). The workshop facilitated collaborative access to laboratory resources for learning, research, development, and experimentation. It was tailored for faculty and students aspiring to specialize in Cybersecurity research and education.
