Admissions to the Robert C. Nusbaum Honors College

Some entering freshmen will be automatically admitted based on their NSU application, high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores. Others, arriving late in the admissions cycle or joining the RCNHC as transfer or continuing students, must submit an application to the RC Nusbaum Honors College in addition to their regular Norfolk State University application. Admission criteria and deadlines for the DNIMAS, Parsons, and Discipline-Specific Honors Programs differ, so please study the application diligently.

Admissions Criteria and Requirements for the alison J. and Ella W. Parsons General Honors Program

The Parsons General Honors Program is open to all majors. Parsons participants include students supported by Presidential Scholarships, Provost’s Scholarships, William L. Craig Honors College Scholarships, Barnes and Noble Honors College Scholarships, Norfolk 17 Honors College Scholarship and the Robert C. Nusbaum Honors College Scholarship. Students not receiving those scholarships are also encouraged to inquire about eligibility.

Eligibility requirements for high school students are a 1080 SAT (Math + Verbal) and an unweighted high school GPA of at least 3.0. An ACT score of 21 or higher is also acceptable. The requirement for current NSU students and transfer students is also a 3.0 GPA.

Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and take 30 hours of Honors courses in their time at NSU, to include at least one Honors Seminar capstone course: General Studies (GST) 345 H or GST 445 H. The student must earn at least a “C” in that course. Students successfully completing GST 345 H or GST 445 H with at least a grade of “C” earn the privilege of requesting customized Honors courses from their instructors.

Transfer students entering NSU with an academic Associate’s degree, plus a GPA of 3.0 or above, may earn a special RCN Honors College diploma by completing 18 credit hours’ worth of Honors courses, to include

Admission Criteria and Requirements for the Discipline-Specific Honors Programs

As part of the Robert C Nusbaum Honors College, the NSU Discipline-Specific Honors Programs provide exciting communities for students with strong commitments to their respective major fields and meta-majors. (Link to DSHP website) There are currently nine departments offering DSHPs:

Students in a DSHP must take at least 18 hours of Honors courses from the General Education tiers as designated by their department and at least 12 hours of Honors courses in their major, to include a designated Honors capstone course. Admission Criteria and Requirements for the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Science

The primary goal of the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS) is to address the severe shortage of minority scientists by producing graduates who are capable of successfully completing graduate studies in the basic and applied sciences. Graduates of the Institute will also be capable of entering medical or other professional schools. Successful completion of the DNIMAS program results in a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, Optical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics. Entering freshmen must have a 3.3 cumulative grade point average from high school and a minimum score of 1200 (Math + Verbal) on the SAT or 24 on the ACT. Students in the program must also maintain at least a 3.3, and  receive no grade lower than a C.
