About Us
The Department of History and Interdisciplinary Studies is home to faculty and students who are passionate about scholarship. The faculty include historians, geographers, linguists, and scholars of American, African American, Cultural and Women's Studies. Our faculty are active scholars who publish regularly and involve students in their research. All of our faculty focus some aspect of their work on the study of race and the African Diaspora, a theme which unifies our department and our course offerings. Our students choose from degree programs in history or interdisciplinary studies, you can explore the options on our Programs page. No matter which degree plan our students choose, they all learn to research, write and communicate their ideas and knowledge to a wide range of audiences and gain an appreciation and understanding of the complexity of the human experience, both in the past and today.
Student Clubs
The department hosts four student clubs. Membership to the History Club and ISSA are open to all students. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honor Society, is restricted by the regulations of the national organization, which requires students to maintain a 3.0 GPA overall and have completed 15 credit hours of history classes with a minimum GPA of 3.1 in their history classes. Membership in Alpha Iota Sigma, the Interdisciplinary Studies Honor Society, requires students to have maintained a 3.3 overall GPA.
History Club
NSU's History Club is an active group of budding historians and history-lovers who enjoy coming together to discuss the discipline of history, view historical films, do community service and find like-minded friends.
Membership
Members of the History Club come from all disciplines, not just history majors. If you are curious about joining the History Club, please contact the club president or advisers and join our mailing list.
Interdisciplinary Studies Student Association (ISSA)
The ISSA is the organization for students interested in how a variety of disciplines work together. Students come together to find like-minded friends, talk about major issues in their own lives and the world, and participate in research and scholarship. You can find the club on Facebook or come by the department to join.
