Brief Biography

Dr. Hargsoon Yoon earned his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State University in 2003. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from Yonsei University, South Korea. Dr. Yoon also worked at Hynix Semiconductor Co. as a senior research engineer and a task force leader for system intergrated circuit device development for seven years. After working as a post-doc at Pennsylvania State University and a research associate professor at University of Arkansas, he joined the Department of Engineering at the Norfolk State University in 2010.

He is the director of Nanotechnology Cleanroom Facility and the founder of Neural Engineering and Nano Electronics laboratory in NSU. Dr. Yoon served as review panel of the NIH BRAIN Initiative grant (R21) program from 2015 to 2018. He is also serving as the panel of NIH SBIR/STTR grant programs: ETTN-10 Clinical Neurophysiology, Devices, Neuroprosthetics and Biosensors and ETTN-19: Commercialization Readiness Pilot. He served as the Guest Edito of Journal: Biosensors, Special Issues on Neural Sensing and Interfacing Technology. He is currently serving as an Associate Editor for Special Section Nanodevices of Journal: Frontiers in Nanotechnology and a program committee of SPIE international conference for Nano-, Bio-, Info-Tech Sensors and Systems. Dr. Yoon is also a senior member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and a member of Society for Neuroscience.

Research Interests

Dr. Yoon’s research interests include:

  • Neural sensing and imaging to understand neuronal network and cognitive functions of behaving animals
  • Cosmic radiation induced impairments on cognitive functions related to space exploration ​

Dr. Yoon has developed several neural sensing and imaging devices and systems to measure neuronal network activities and cognitive functions from behaving animals. His research has been funded by NSF, NASA, DoD and NIH. Selected recent projects are listed below.
