Advising Program

PLSSSC’s academic advising program is an important component of the educational process at Norfolk State University. Our proactive advising model establishes a progressive scholastic relationship with (primarily) freshman and sophomore students that helps them make informed decisions about their academic, social and personal goals.

Services include:

  • One-on-one consultations
  • Academic skill development
  • Academic Recovery Program (intrusive advising for students in academic jeopardy)
  • Registration
  • Instruction (SEM and GST 200)
  • Satisfactory Academic Performance (SAP) planning
  • Career Planning 
  • Graduate School preparation 
  • Other referrals as neccessary


Mission

PLSSSC advisors work diligently and demonstrate integrity in support of the highest standards of excellence for the University. Our program prides itself on mirroring the core values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

Our advising program contributes to student success by empowering students to create and adhere to meaningful education plans, develop academic skills and gain self-reliance through a comprehensive variety of professional services and programs. 

Goals

  • Establish a positive ongoing relationship with shared responsibility
  • Provide accurate and timely information and interpret university, core curriculum, and major requirements
  • Evaluate and monitor students’ academic progress throughout the semester and promote improvements 
  • Enable students to be self-directed and self-reliant
  • Maintain effective partnerships with the campus community
  • Increase proficiency and use of technology to better serve student and faculty and more efficiently use resources
  • Maintain clear and up-to-date policies and procedures
     

Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge
Students will demonstrate knowledge of degree program requirements and the ability to select courses each semester to progress towards fulfillment of their educational plans.

Academic and Professional Integrity
Students will demonstrate understanding of Norfolk State University academic policies and procedures, ethical standards and how these policies and procedures impact their educational progress.

Diversity
Students will demonstrate awareness of the citizenship skills necessary to live and work in a diverse world.

Critical Thinking
Students will demonstrate the ability to construct short-term and long-term plans, make complex decisions, solve problems and evaluate actions.
