The College of Liberal Arts is composed of 7 departments. The College consists of ten undergraduate and six graduate degree programs which are housed in the departments of English and Foreign Languages, History and Interdisciplinary Studies, Mass Communications, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Visual and Performing Arts (which houses Music, Fine Arts, and Drama/Theater).
Departments
English & Foreign Languages
Now more than ever, it is important for students to be able to read, write and think critically. This requires the ability to develop and express thoughts orally and in written format. Development of these skill sets enable students to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate so that ideas can be shared with others.
History & Interdisciplinary Studies
History is not just old news. It provides the basis for shaping our history and culture. Whereas, Interdisciplinary Studies integrates ideas, theories, knowledge and information from two or more disciplines in order to fully address an issue, topic, or problem.
Mass Communication & Journalism
The Department provides instruction to future media practitioners through teaching, research, and public service that lead to careers in radio, digital journalism, television, strategic communications, and film.
Political Science
A range of skills are required to negotiate the political processes that result in sound governance. The Political Science Department prepares students to be knowledgeable and skilled in understanding bureaucracies as lawyers, foreign service employees, and as administrators at federal, state and local government agencies.
Psychology
The examination of human behavior is the key that that unlocks the door to what it means to be human. The Psychology Department provides students guided instruction and research methods to reach conclusions as to what makes us tick.
Socio-Cybersecurity
This project aims to infuse cybersecurity within the social science undergraduate curricula through experiential learning. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation, HBCU-UP Targeted Infusion Project.
Sociology
Since all human behavior is social, te subject matter of sociology embraces all aspects of human culture. The Sociology Department consists of an undergraduate program and two graduate programs that examine social life, social change, and the consequences of social interaction.
Visual & Performing Arts
The department is the home for developing creative expression through fine, musical and dramatic arts.
