Department of Health, Physical Education, Exercise Science
The Department of Health, Physical Education, Exercise Science offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science with three program concentrations. These concentrations include Health, Physical Education – Teacher Education (BS.EXE.PE), Kinesiotherapy (BS.EXE.KIN), and Health, Wellness, & Rehabilitation (BS.EXE.HWR). The Department of Health, Physical Education, Exercise Science academically prepares students to confidently enter the fields of health and wellness professions within the specific concentrations.

Health and Physical Education
This concentration is designed to prepare students to become health, physical education teachers for grades PK-12 in public school settings. The major includes courses with an emphasis (1) in health and physical education, (2) on physical activity as a means to health (wellness), (3) on a conceptual wellness, physical education, lifetime sports and fitness, and (4) and sensitivity to cultural variety involving health and physical education. Teacher education candidates must take the general core, professional education courses, and culminate the final semester with 12 semester hours of student teaching. The teacher certification program in physical education also permits add on endorsements in aquatics, and/or driver education.
KINESIOTHERAPY
The Registered Kinesiotherapist (RKT) is a health care professional who, under the direction of a physician, treats the effects of disease, injury and congenital disorders through the use of therapeutic exercise and education. These professionals are trained to work wherever people with disabilities need treatment. RKTs work primarily in Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, in private and public hospitals and may be employed in clinics for cardiac patients or special schools and camps for children with disabilities. The program consists of the General Education core courses in addition to 2 semesters of internship (total of 1,000 hours) upon completion of ALL didactic course work. This concentration is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the American Kinesiotherapy Association (AKTA)
Health, wellness and rehabilitation
Health, Wellness and Rehabilitation (HWR) is designed to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge needed for a range of careers including: the areas of Cardiac Rehabilitation; Pulmonary Rehabilitation; and Sports Medicine (i.e. Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Orthopedic Rehabilitation, and Exercise Physiology). The program consists of the General Education core courses in addition to 1 semester of internship upon completion of ALL didactic course work. This concentration also provides most of the prerequisites needed for those students interested on continuing towards a graduate degree in Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Occupational Therapy, among others.
