In February 2020, the Norfolk State University Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) team—along with 47 other HBCUs—qualified to compete for the National Championship Tournament (NCT) in Los Angeles, California, March 2020.  The Jeopardy-style tournament was cancelled, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result, American Honda Motors proposed to use the 2020 HCASC NCT competition grant funds to distribute among the "Great 48" teams with the goal of identifying community non-profits providing service to those adversely affected during the crisis.

On June 8, 2020, HCASC students and Coach Michael Cotter presented virtual mock checks (via Zoom)  to Ms. Dourina Petersen, Executive Director of the Chesapeake Care Clinic and to Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols, President and CEO of the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia.  A third presentation was made June 12, 2020, to Dr. Amanda Gibson and Student Directors of the EVMS HOPES Free Clinic.

Norfolk State University salutes its community partners and their efforts to meet head-on the nutrition and health needs of asset-limited, under-insured, and under-served individuals.
