NSU Sociological Honor Society Inducts 31 Students

(NSU NEWSROOM---Dec. 4, 2013) More than 250 people attended a recent ceremony at Norfolk State University to honor the academic achievements of 31 students inducted into the NSU Sociological Honor Society.

The inductees, who were pinned by NSU Sociology Department faculty members, were recognized for their academic accomplishments and volunteer efforts to help further study in the discipline, said Robert K. Perkins, the chair of the Sociology Department.

Perkins stated the requirements to join the organization are rigorous. Students must major in Sociology, be at least a junior, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and complete at least 18 hours of study in the discipline. Overall, the NSU Sociological Honor Society has around 55 members who are either juniors, seniors or graduate students.

“For those reasons alone (academic and volunteer efforts) they should be honored,” Perkins said. “Our society is a campus honors society and all of our resources go right back into the community.”

Perkins said the organization has partnered with an NSU alumnus, who majored in sociology, to secure financial resources for treatment and education in Malwi. The African country has many residents who suffer from HIV, he said.

Some of the students inducted into the honor society, held in the NSU Student Center, received special honors. Cierra Mobley was named student of the year in the bachelor of arts in sociology program. Porché Whitby was named student of the year in the master of criminal justice program, and Michelle Reed was named student of the year in the master of urban affairs program. The department also named Dr. William Agyei, an NSU sociology professor and Fulbright Scholar, as faculty of the year.

Other students inducted into the ceremony include: Janelle Alston, Makeya Ashburn, Dameka Black, Lakeshia Bradley, Ashley Buck, Taylor Campbell-Wimbish, Ayeshia Chatmon, Angela Cobb, Hilton Cole, Lynn Godfrey, Alan Greene, Lakesha Lytes, K.
