Affordable Colleges Online
Norfolk State University has been ranked a top college in Virginia for return on investment, according to AffordableCollegesOnline.org (AC Online). A recently launched new ranking: “AC Online: Highest Return on Investment Colleges in Virginia,” identifies the 28 Virginia colleges where degrees pay off the most. Students who graduate from these colleges earn more over their lifetimes, on average, than graduates from other Virginia institutions. NSU is ranked 24th.
AC Online analyzed 173 Virginia colleges using tuition and fees (provided by IPEDS/NCES), graduates’ average starting salaries and return on investment (ROI) calculation (provided by PayScale) to reach its findings. In addition, AC Online only considered fully accredited, 4-year, not-for-profit institutions (provided by the Carnegie Foundation). Norfolk State University is fully and unconditionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and all programs eligible for national accreditation are nationally accredited. The University’s distance education programs have received the Quality Standards Certification from the United States Distance Learning Association.
Military Advanced Education magazine
Norfolk State University has been recognized by Military Advanced Education magazine in the publication's 2013 Guide to America’s Top Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities. Published since 2005, Military Advanced Education provides information for military education service officers (ESO), transition officers (TO) and other top-level commands who work with service members, veterans and their families during active duty, transition and post-transition to optimize their armed forces educational benefits.
NSU is the only public HBCU named to the Top Military-Friendly list. Schools that applied for inclusion on the list were judged in several areas, including support, such as evidence of a military student center or Veterans Affairs counselors; financial, including in-state tuition for active duty service members; military culture, such an ROTC program; and flexibility, including online learning options.
Best for Vets College
Norfolk State University has been named a Best for Vets College for 2013, according to a survey conducted by the Military Times. More than 650 schools, a record for the annual list, responded to the news publication’s 2013 Best for Vets: Colleges survey, which consisted of nearly 150 questions. Only 68 schools, including NSU, made the list. "We are honored to be named to the Best for Vets College list and to be recognized nationally as a leader in service to our military men and women," said NSU President Tony Atwater.
In addition to survey responses, the Military Times used a methodology that examined credit-hour rates, tuition assistance, academic support, graduation rates, veterans services and other factors for determining which schools made the Best for Vets list.
Norfolk State University has received notification from the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) that its Distance Education program has received the Quality Standards Certification. NSU, the largest public HBCU in Virginia, now becomes the only HBCU in the nation to be awarded this Certification and the first public University in the Commonwealth! The USDLA’s Quality Standards Team was unanimous in endorsing the University for this Certification.
Washington Monthly magazine named Norfolk State University among its top colleges and universities in its 2012 College Rankings. NSU ranked 227 out of nearly 700 schools in the master’s universities category.
