HRT Changes Procedure for Boarding Light Rail Trains

Press Button to Enter Light Rail Train. Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is changing how the doors on its light rail trains open. Starting Monday, November 12, passengers must press the button on the train door to enter the train. The doors will no longer open automatically. Asking people to press the button will help reduce wear and tear and keep the train comfortable.

Ridership on The Tide varies hour to hour. Some hours, such as in the evening or just after rush hour, fewer people are riding the rails. Yet each time the train stops at a station, the doors open wide, letting out heat in the winter and cool air in the summer. Wasting that conditioned air adds wear and tear to train system components. On days when crowds are big – such as exhibition baseball games or major downtown festivals such as the upcoming Grand Illumination – HRT will continue to open the doors automatically. In the meantime, remember to Press the Button. For more information about HRT, visit www.gohrt.com .
