Classroom Certificate Courses

Registration Information

To register for a Community and Professional Education course, complete a Course Registration Application Form and mail, e-mail to vbhec@nsu.edu or fax to 757-368-4151.

Registrations are processed and confirmed when an application has been completed and a nonrefundable, nontransferable $50 registration fee is paid. This fee will be credited toward the total course fee. If it becomes necessary for a student to withdraw from a course, a written request must be provided three (3) business days prior to the date the class begins, in order to receive a full refund of course tuition less the $50 registration fee. After the first class meeting, 50% of the tuition will be refundable, and after the second class meeting, there will be no refund of course tuition. Payment for courses may be made by check, money order, or credit card; cash is not accepted.

Prerequisites – For all Medical Career Training Programs

  1. 18 years of age or older
  2. Fluent in English speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  3. Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate, or a transcript and proof of equivalency, if high school not attended in the United States
  4. No illegal drug use
  5. Proof of United States residency or citizenship (green card or American Passport)

Course Offerings

Laboratory Assistant
Location: Virginia Beach Higher Education Center
A certificate program addressing the role of a laboratory assistant and provides the basic knowledge of equipment, procedures, materials, and safety practices. Instructors introduce students to the laws governing clinical laboratory operation, including those on patient confidentiality, data storage, sanitation, chemical handling and quality control.
Medical Assistant Certificate Program

This program prepares students to be professional medical assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates are equipped to assist physicians with examinations and treatments, take medical histories, perform diagnostic tests, expose X-ray films, sterilize instruments and supplies, assist with minor surgery and administer medications. The program goal is to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Tuition includes textbooks, supplies but not the required national certification exam for Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC), EKG Technician Certification (ETC) and Phlebotomy Technician Certification (PTC).
EKG Interpretation

Paralegal Certificate Course

A practical, hands-on intensive program in this rapidly growing career designed to train students in specific legal areas. The course consists of eight modules that focus on a particular aspect of the legal profession.

The Advanced Paralegal Studies Program is a course that supplements the 10-week Paralegal Studies Program.
The Advanced course is directed toward persons who are currently employed by an attorney’s office or a governmental law-related office.

60 Classroom Hours - Ten Weeks / 80 Hour Externship (both must be completed to receive certification)
