The Dr. Patricia Lynch Stith Student Success Center (PLSSSC) Peer Tutoring Program - aims to assist NSU students with becoming independent learners by sharing strategies that positively impact their academic achievement and facilitating sessions that assist students with developing and strengthening course skills. The tutoring program offers free one-on-one tutoring to assist students with individual academic needs as well as small group tutoring sessions where students can share thoughts and course information. The PLSSSC tutoring program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) at the Level II stage to provide creditability and set standards for the program.
The PLSSSC Peer Tutoring program also offers online tutoring via SMARTHINKING which is also free to NSU students. SMARTHINKING provides assistance in areas to include writing, basic mathematics to Calculus, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Accounting, and Spanish. The mission of the PLSSSC peer tutorial program is to provide academic assistance for comprehension in coursework for an ethnically and culturally diverse student population by using a variety of tutoring techniques and activities that promote independent learning and student success.
The goals of the tutoring program are to help students:
- Meet the demands of college-level work.
- With satisfying the University’s academic requirements.
- With developing learning and study skills that promote learning independency.
Intended Learning Outcomes Students will:
- Demonstrate the ability to independently apply tutored skills on course assessments successfully
- Successfully complete tutored course requirement

Becoming a tutor for the PLSSSC involves a very selective process that includes prospective tutors having:
- High academic achievement (i.e., overall GPA of 3.0 or better, completed course with a 3.0 or better)
- A willingness to serve others
- Superior command of subject matter
Complete the PLSSSC Peer Tutor Application and PLSSSC Peer Tutor Professor Recommendation Form or a reference letter from a professor that instructs the course.
