Civil War Letter - November 1863 (25 items)

An extraordinary group of seven letters totaling 25 pages written by a Confederate woman and her daughter in Portsmouth to their son and brother at war. The letters describe the demoralized state of Southerners on the home front and the war front. They reveal hardships and suffering in occupied Portsmouth, and the whites' unrepentant hostility to local blacks, especially black soldiers in the streets.
