Highlights of Recent Accolades and Service-Learning Activities, 2010-2011

  • Partnered with the Office of Student Activities and Leadership; the Virginia Conflict Resolution Center, and Old Dominion University for MLK Jr. Day service projects.
  • Celebrated Constitution Day events: Theme: The Healthcare Bill: Guest Speaker: Dr. Newby Alexander Participated in the “Get out to Vote Virginia” African- American Leadership Mobilizing Group Civic Engagement efforts for the Mid-Term Elections
  • Faculty, Administrators, from the Police Dept., Student Affairs, Marketing and Communications, and the Director of Service-learning attended the Annual Governor’s Emergency Preparedness Conference for Higher Education in Richmond, Va.
  • Partnered with Student Activities and Leadership for a successful Community Fair Invited to be Founding member of the Va. Engage Service-learning and Civic Engagement Coalition for Institutions of Higher Ed.
  • Awarded “Semester of Service” grant from Youth Service America and State Farm
  • Several SLCE Faculty and COI/ SLICE faculty members attended the Gulf-South Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Summit, Hosted by Va. Tech, in Roanoke
  • Students participated in the annual Teen Cultural Fest sponsored by the City of Norfolk, Department of Youth Services.
  • Honors College students participated in the Scrabble Competition to raise funds for Literacy Awareness at WHRO.
  • Several Faculty members attended the State Office of Volunteerism and Community Service Forum in Chesapeake.
  • Several Faculty members from Community of Inquiry/service-learning co-hort. attended and presented at the HBCU Faculty Development Network Conference in New Orleans
  • Received Certificates of Appreciation from our Steps-2-Success community partner, and the Virginia Conflict Resolution Center.
  • Students and the Director, of SLCE participated in the African-American Read-In Day, at Lindenwood Elementary School
  • Students from Political Science volunteered as Precinct Workers on Election Day, and engaged in the Poll Workers training with CNU students.

  • Listed in the 2007 President’s Higher Education Community Service National Honor Roll
  • One of three higher Education institutions to initiate the Virginia tidewater Consortium Service-Learning and Civic Engagement
  • Committee comprised of 13 institution in the South Hampton Roads region
  • Third place winner in all three categories for the Association of State colleges and Universities ADP-South Regional Conference on Civic Engagement.
