Programs

The Department of Secondary Education and School Leadership offers multi-dimensional Urban Education degree programs and teacher education to assist in-service and pre-service school practitioners interested in acquiring state endorsements and enhancing their professional development.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

The MAT program requires that applicants comply as follows:

  • pass Praxis Core/ SAT/ ACT
  • have an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • submit a complete Graduate application
  • submit a personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals
  • submit three letters of recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant's academic and professional background
  • submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • submit a Certificate of Preliminary Endorsement form which has been completed by an advisor in the academic department of intended major
  • complete program requirements
  • pass Praxis II & VCLA

Master of Arts Subject Area Concentration (MASAC)

The MASAC program requires that applicants have the following:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • A minimum cumulative (GPA) of 2.5
  • Complete an NSU Graduate application
  • Complete a Certificate of Preliminary Endorsement form which has been completed by an advisor in the academic department of intended major
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant's academic and professional background
  • A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.

Urban Education/Community Counseling

The Urban Education program requires that applicants have the following:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • Complete an NSU Graduate application
  • A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or better
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant's academic and professional background
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.

Urban Education/School Counseling PreK-12

The School Counseling PreK-12 program requires that applicants have the following:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • Complete an NSU graduate application
  • A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or better
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant's academic and professional background
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.

Urban Education/Principal Preparation Program (Online)

The Principal Preparation Program requires that applicants have the following:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • Complete an NSU graduate application
  • A minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.5
  • The candidates are expected to have three years of experience as certified teachers prior to admission (provisional licensure is not accepted)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant's academic and professional background
  • A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals
