Faculty Support

The Norfolk State University faculty embrace the idea that scholarship and teaching are inseparable because scholarship is the foundation of teaching—and they are truly the embodiment of this ideal. The scholarly and professional activities of faculty connect them to a vital intellectual community beyond the walls of Norfolk State’s campus, ensure their continuing development as enlightened seekers, contribute to the body of knowledge and wisdom, and renew their enthusiasm to engage students. The NSU community is committed to creating an environment that allows the faculty to excel as teachers, scholars, and mentors.

Because this is a central commitment of the University, it is imperative that NSU seek financial support for one of its most crucial resources—its faculty.

NSU Fund for Faculty Excellence gives the Provost and the Deans of each of Norfolk State University’s academic units with a dependable source of income for faculty needs, including special teaching and research materials, student-faculty collaborative projects, library acquisitions, salary supplements, and travel assistance.

  • Gifts of $2,500 or more annually can be designated for the NSU Fund for Faculty Excellence in honor of a former faculty mentor.  These gifts will collectively be used to ensure that Norfolk State University has the ability to attract and retain teacher-scholars with outstanding qualifications.
  • 10% of all initial gifts received for the NSU Fund for Faculty Excellence will be utilized to provide resources for library acquisitions and/or technology resources at the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library on the Norfolk State University campus.

Endowed faculty positions are among Norfolk State University’s most important tools for recruiting, developing, and sustaining a strong cadre of dedicated teacher-scholars.

  • Endowed Dean’s Chair/Distinguished Faculty Chair.  The endowment of a Dean’s Chair or Distinguished Faculty Chair at NSU represents a landmark commitment, ensuring that the most visible and important positions in NSU’s academic units are held by distinguished and talented leading scholar-educators. Endowed Chairs require a minimum gift commitment of $5 million.
  • Endowed Professorships.  The endowment of a professorship offers faculty members the resources necessary to pursue new lines of research or innovative teaching methods, ensuring the stability and strength of our academic programs and allowing Norfolk State University to encourage new levels of achievement among its most promising faculty. A minimum gift commitment of $2.5 million is required to endow a new faculty position at Norfolk State University, while a minimum gift commitment of $1 million is required to endow an existing faculty position.
