Initiatives Seek to Increase School Spirit

The Department of Athletics and the Student Government Association have introduced initiatives to get the campus community to rally around the Spartan athletics team and create more school spirit at home games.

Additionally, each Norfolk State University class of students have had or will have the chance to run through the tunnel prior to the game to be recognized and help welcome the football team onto the field. The freshman class welcomed the team Sept. 8 and the sophomore class on Sept. 29. The juniors will welcome the team to the field on Nov. 10 and the senior class on Nov. 17 — prior to the Senior Day football game.

This year, the Student Government Association has also been working hard to show school spirit through its Spartan Territory initiative. As the student cheering section for athletic events from football to volleyball, the Spartan Territory is always right of the Spartan Legion Marching Band.

In her letter to students, SGA President Astra Armstrong emphasized the importance of game attendance. “Your presence at our games means more to our student-athletes than you could possibly imagine. When we attend games, it increases our spirit of unity throughout campus and the vigor of our teams to fight and win.”
