Virtual Graduation Updates

Greetings Spartans and the Graduating Class of 2020:

This is an important message regarding our plans for the Fall 2020 virtual graduation ceremony and I hope it finds you all safe and in the best of health. In the span of nearly eight months, our normal lives—as we knew them— altered. The COVID-19 pandemic swept our nation and ultimately the world with unprecedented consequences. It disrupted our business and social practices as well as our daily routines. Norfolk State University remains committed to the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. This commitment is paramount and is at the forefront of all of our decision making processes.

As a response to the pandemic, the University has had to reimagine all of its traditional events in order to ensure the proper and required steps to promote a healthy and safe environment for the Spartan community are respected. To that end, we will hold a special joint virtual ceremony honoring the May and December Classes of 2020 on Saturday, December 12, 2020. While we are unable to watch you walk across the stage in the Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall Arena, we will recognize your achievements virtually with your families and friends.

Under the direct supervision of the Office of University Events and the Office of the Registrar, the University will produce a virtual ceremony. In the coming weeks, you will receive information requesting a personalized video clip and a headshot for the virtual ceremony. Please adhere to the submission deadlines to ensure you are included in this special recognition ceremony.

As president, I want our graduates to know that we are so proud of your accomplishments. They are indeed worthy of celebration. We appreciate your patience, the individual and collective sacrifices each of you have made, and your enthusiasm about joining the ranks of the more than 35,000 alumni of this great institution.

We will continue to communicate with you during these upcoming days and weeks to provide information as we draw near to graduation day. If you have any questions regarding the virtual ceremony, please contact the Office of University Events at 757-823-2987 or visit

Thank you, be safe, and remember to Behold the Green and Gold.
