NSU Students Featured in New Canaan Experiment Documentary

A 1969 Norfolk State University School of Education pilot program that explored race relations in a New England town was revisited in a WTKR News 3 documentary. The station’s “New Canaan Experiment” aired on Feb. 20 and provided updated interviews with NSU alumni who participated in the original project—which placed African American teaching interns in a predominately white school district—along with interviews from current NSU students who aspire to become educators. NSU Day 2020 at General Assembly in Richmond (Slideshow)

Norfolk State University President Javaune Adams-Gaston helped lead a contingent of students, faculty, staff, and alumni in Richmond on Feb. 13 to celebrate NSU Day at the Virginia General Assembly. A group of more than 60 people traveled to the state capitol to help advocate the university’s legislative priorities, to help amplify NSU’s accomplishments and to provide students with a hands-on experience of the state government process.

United States Sen. Mark Warner and Congressman Bobby Scott visited Norfolk State University on Feb. 20 to participate in a student town hall where they talked about college affordability and the recent passage of the FUTURE Act. The bill passed by the U.S. Senate restores $255 million in annual funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.


Dr. Patrick Mbajekwe, an assistant professor of history at Norfolk State University, served as a faculty expert on WVEC 13 (Feb. 7) where he discussed U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s addition of six countries to the administration’s restricted travel list. To watch the segment, click here.
Governor Ralph Northam Announces UTeach Partnership at NSU (Slideshow)

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam visited Norfolk State University on Feb. 10 at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center to announce a proposed $1 million investment to establish the UTeach program at Norfolk State and Virginia State universities. UTeach is a national program that works to recruit, train and retain educators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
