Veteran Affairs

  Work Study Benefits (VA 4-8690)

Applicable to Chapters 30, 31, 32, 35, and 106 (1606)

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has a Work-Study Program which offers employment to those attending school at least three-quarter time and receiving educational benefits. The monetary allowance is equal to the prevailing federal minimum wage and is non-taxable.

Eligible veterans may contract for a maximum of 750 hours of service in a fiscal year. This may not exceed 250 hours in a quarter, semester, or other applicable enrollment period. An advance check for the first 50 hours can be sent to the student who is accepted, if requested.

After the advance is worked off, a check is generated for each additional 50 hours worked. Work-study services may be performed at VA regional offices and educational institutions, VA medical facilities, VA national cemeteries, and certain other organizations approved for outreach activities. The services must be VA related.

Eligibility

Students must be enrolled at least ¾ time and pursuing a program of education or training under Chapters 30, 31, 32, 35 or 106 (1606). Whenever feasible, VA will give priority in selection for this allowance to veterans with service-connected disabilities rated at 30% or more. VA will consider the following additional criteria:

  1. need of a student to augment his or her educational assistance;
  2. availability to the student of transportation to the location his or her services are to be performed;
  3. motivation of the veteran, and (4) compatibility of the work assignment to the student’s physical condition.

It is the student’s responsibility to locate an approved Veterans Affairs work-study site. Currently, the only site available at Norfolk State University is the Veterans Affairs Office. Students interested in the VA Work Study Program at Norfolk State University may apply in the Veterans Affairs Office, 324 Godwin Student Center between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
