What is
Spartan Prep?
Spartan Prep Academy is a college awareness program to
introduce students to the many advantages of continuing
their education beyond high school and to the specific
programs available at Norfolk State University (NSU). This
partnership between Norfolk State University at the Virginia
Beach High Educational Center (VBHEC) and the Virginia Beach
City Public Schools is designed to promote college
awareness.
The goal of this initiative is to increase the enrollment
of minority students from Virginia Beach City Public Schools
in post secondary institutions.
The goal of this initiative is to introduce students from
Virginia Beach City Public Schools to careers and
educational opportunities available at NSU. The vision of
Spartan Prep is to help adolescents by offering exposure to
the academic experience, the taking care of ?college
business? experience, and the recreational experience of
college life.
Life Skills
In class, the students will learn a variety of techniques
for dealing with various life skills. Topics covered will
include goal setting, team work, college survival skills,
time management, career options, book discussions, portfolio
development, and other topics adolescents face on a daily
basis.
University Skills
The students will visit the NSU campus and be introduced
to various key people. They will discuss the necessary
skills for a successful college experience during their
classroom experience.
Admittance
To be admitted into the program students must be
nominated from his/her middle by the middle school
principal. Student criteria include:
Passing five subjects with a ?C? or better
Identified Minority (African-American, Hispanic, other)
First generation, college bound student
Principal Recommendation
Exhibit Acceptable Behavior
Rising 9th Grade student
