About VBHEC Library Services

The purpose of this service is to educate the student in the use of academic libraries and to deliver materials as though you were physically on the campus. The Virginia Beach Higher Education Center librarian is located in the Information Resource Center, room 146, Monday through Friday, and other times by appointments.

Computer-Based Bibliography Instruction

Computer-based bibliographic and information services teach students how to investigate topics using a wide range of sources. Students will be provided with an explanation of resources and specific reference tools relating to course content and student assignment. A demonstration will be given on how to choose and use appropriate subject indexes and how to locate journal articles. In addition, a demonstration of indexes and an explanation of how to formulate an effective search statement will be provided. Demonstrations will be followed by a discussion of online databases services for advanced research.

Research Assistance (Consultative Services)

The Virginia Beach Higher Education Center offers a consultation service to students and faculty involved in research. The purpose of this service is to provide professional advice on research strategies so that students and faculty can obtain information pertinent to their research projects. The Norfolk State University librarian at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center will assist in identifying information needs, constructing effective search techniques, locating information using online Internet sites. Resources include bibliographies, the online catalog, electronic indexes and texts, dissertation lists, and reference sources pertinent to the research project.

Research and Reference Assistance

Research and Reference Assistance Reference and research assistance is available by contacting the VBHEC librarian's office. The VBHEC librarian is happy to guide continuing and distance education users in the initial stages of library research for papers or projects using the online catalog, reference sources, electronic indexes, and abstracting sources.


Literature Search?

 A literature search is a list of references on a specific topic. This list may include journal articles or chapters of books. References are obtained by searching the Lyman Beecher Brooks library catalog; or our scholarly electronic database. Once you have completed your literature search, all requests for articles must be submitted on the appropriate interlibrary loan form.


Interlibrary Loan

 If the Lyman Beecher Brooks library does not hold the book or journal articles you require, you are eligible to request an interlibrary loan from another library. Please note that Interlibrary loan requires approximately 7 to 14 days for delivery.

Document Delivery

Books and journal articles can be delivered to the VBHEC sites for you, but not to individual places of residence. The Document Delivery Office is located in the NSU Library on the main campus in Norfolk, Virginia. It handles requests from all students enrolled in the VBHEC courses. To have materials delivered, you must have current status as a registered NSU student. To register and obtain borrowing privileges, present a valid NSU ID or proof of current registration at the circulation desk of the library.


Searching for Information on the Internet

Did you know that if you have Internet access with Netscape or Internet Explorer software, you can link to many resources from the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library website on the World Wide Web?

Norfolk State University off-campus databases are available 24-hours a day 7 days a week via the Internet. These databases provide a combination of abstracts, citations, and full-text articles for scholarly and general interest journals in all academic disciplines

  Reserve Items

Norfolk State University faculty may place library or instructor-owned materials needed for a course on reserve in the Information Resource Center, room.

These materials can be made available with restricted loan periods at the IRC service desk. A current valid ID card is required for use of material.

 
     
     
    Ask a Librarian Online

Ask a librarian online is an e-mail based reference service provided by the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center. This service provides a brief answers to factual questions or suggest resources that will be useful in your search for information.

We will strive to respond to your request within approximately 48 hours (2 working days). To submit a request, please contact the VBHEC librarian at: vblibrary@nsu.edu.

 
     
     
     
  Obtain a Borrowing Card

Norfolk State University students, faculty and staff can obtain a Virginia Tidewater Consortium Borrowing card from the VBHEC librarian located in the IRC Center, room 146.
