Transfer Student Requirements
Norfolk State University is waiting to nurture your
dreams. If you are serious about obtaining your degree,
we can help you achieve your goals.
What Defines a Transfer Student?
An applicant who has graduated from high school, has
attended another regionally accredited post- secondary
institution, and has attempted one or more courses, is a
transfer student, regardless of credit earned.

NSU Transfer Policy
The following is
Norfolk State University’s policy on transfers that
meets the requirements of the Virginia State Policy on
Transfer for students from the Virginia Community
College System and other institutions:
NSU will waive the
general education requirements and grant junior-level
status to admitted students who have completed an
Associate in Arts, an Associate in Science or an
Associate in Applied Science program at an accredited
institution.
Requirements for
specific degree programs and special course requirements
for all majors are listed under the
Transfer Course Equivalencies and in the NSU Transfer Guide.
Catalogs and Transfer Guides are available at each
Virginia community college campus.

Transfer Admissions
Prospective transfer students will be admitted to
Norfolk State University if the following requirements
have been met:
§ The
applicant has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point
average of 2.0 or above, on a 4.0 grading scale.
§ The
applicant is in good academic, financial, and social
standing with all previously attended institutions.
§ A
completed application along with the $25 non-refundable
application fee has been submitted to the Office of
Admissions
§ Official
transcripts from all colleges attended have been
submitted to the Office of Admissions. High school
transcript/GED scores and official copy of standardized
test results (SAT/ACT) are required if fewer than 15
college semester hours of credit are transferred.
Admission to the University does not guarantee admission
to a particular degree granting program or major as they
may require a minimum GPA or specific prerequisite for
courses. For more information on admissions
requirements for specific programs or majors, visit the
Before Transferring to NSU page.
The
Office of Admissions makes the final determination
concerning acceptance after all transcripts from each
college attended have been received and reviewed.
Transfer Credit is accepted for coursework with a
grade of “C” or above from regionally accredited
institutions of higher learning.
Central
Source for Transfer Information
The
Admissions office serves as the central source for
information on transfers. Appeals of specific incoming
transfer credits may be made to the Assistant Director
of Admissions for Transfer Students. The ability to
transfer courses in the major may be appealed to the
department head within each school and then to the
dean’s office. A final decision rests with the Vice
President for Academic Affairs.

Joann Jones, Assistant Director for Transfer Students,

New

enrollment. This one-day program offered during the
summer and fall introduces the student to the campus and
allows for pre-registration to the University. Contact
