Transfer Student Policy
I. Norfolk State University
Policy on Transfer
The following is Norfolk
State University's policy on transfers which carries out the
states recommendations on transfer of students from VCCS and
Richard Bland College to NSU.
- The
transfer student may be admitted to Norfolk State
University when the application, application fee, and
official transcripts have been received in the
Admissions Office. With a grade point average of 2.0 or
above the transfer student is admitted in good
standing.
- Students
completing a transfer degree program (AAS,AS,AA) will be
admitted to the University. Admission to the University
does not guarantee admission to a particular degree
granting program or major as they may require a minimum
GPA or specific prerequisite for courses.
II. Requirement for
Admission to Specific Programs
III. Acceptance and Application of
Credits
- Students
who have earned an associate degree are considered to
have met the lower division general education
requirements. Whether through an articulation agreement
or the associate degree, these students will be
considered to have attained junior standing.
- Transfer
students shall receive credits earned through
articulation agreements and/or the
transfer module.
It
may take longer than two years to complete the
baccalaureate because of prerequisites in the major or
other requirements or circumstances.
Transfer from the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) may
be worked out through articulation agreements and on a
case by case basis.
Communication and
Information
Norfolk State University
believes that good communication is a most important factor
in successful student transfer. Therefore, information will
be shared with all transfer students as well as with other
community colleges in the Virginia Community College
System.
- Norfolk
State University faculty meet regularly with their
community college counterparts to discuss academic
issues.
- Transfer
Days are held each year for potential transfer students.
- Norfolk
State University provides transfer students with a
formal evaluation of their transfer credit prior to
registration. This assessment leads to the issuance of a
document listing transfer courses approved by the
University. In addition a Record of Academic Progress
sheet is provided to each student so that he/she will
not only know what courses have been accepted but also
what courses need to be taken in order to fulfill their
degree requirements.
- Articulated transfer agreements have been developed in
many academic areas and both the VCCS and NSU meet
regularly to discuss any program changes.
- A
Transfer Guide is published and updated each year and is
available to transfer students, faculty, and counselors.
- The
Assistant Director of Admissions for Transfer Students
serves as the chief transfer officer.
Central Source for Transfer
Information
The Admissions Office serves as the central source for
information on transfers. Appeals of specific incoming
transfer credits may be made to the The Assistant Director
of Admissions for Transfer Students. The ability to transfer
courses in the major may be appealed to the department head
within each school and then to the dean's office.
Transfer Student Services
Transfer students are
afforded the following:
- The same
opportunities as all students in regard to admission to
the University. Course selection will depend on the
program of the student.
- Access to
campus housing
- Access to
financial aid
- Special
orientation and registration
- Admissions Office staff assigned to work with transfers
- Contacts
at both VCCS campuses and NSU in the Admissions and
Counseling areas.
Transfer Student
Responsibilities
For transfer success
students must take responsibility for the following:
- Determine
your area or areas of interest and seek information and
advice regarding that area or areas.
- Plan a
course of study at the community college that is
compatible with degree programs at NSU.
- Understand that changes in plans of study such as a
change of major may reduce the applicability of transfer
credit to a degree program at NSU.
Transfer Student Tracking
Norfolk State University has
and will continue to report community college transfer
student progress to the community colleges in a consistent
and identifiable form. The tracking continues until the
student graduates or withdraws from the University whichever
comes first. The tracking documents performance, retention,
race, and graduation rates of students from community
colleges.
Transfer Module (Parallel
Program)
- The
Transfer Module is a core of courses that will
transfer either in part or in its entirety (35 hours)
from the community college to Norfolk State University.
- These
courses will apply at NSU toward meeting the general
education requirements. (may be used as electives also)
- All
courses in the Transfer Module must be completed within
the VCCS and
students must earn a grade of 'C' or better in each
course if they wish to transfer.
- All
courses in the module will complete or partially fulfill
the general education requirement.
Articulation Agreements
(Two plus Two)
The
Transfer
Module supplements the many articulation agreements
already formed with the community colleges within the
VCCS.
Deadlines
While NSU has a rolling
admissions policy for housing, scholarship, and registration
purposes it is always best to apply early spring for the
best results.
Requirements for Degree
Programs
Requirements for specific
degree programs are listed under
Academics and
in the University catalog which all students receive free
during orientation. Catalogs and Transfer Guides are kept on
each community college campus as well.
In addition, special course
requirements for all majors are computerized and can be run
on the TCC campuses showing the first two years required for
the A.A., A.S., A.A.S. and the final two years at NSU.
