1. Should I apply as a first-year student or as a transfer student? |
| The classification of undergraduate students is
determined as follows: Freshmen 0-29 semester hours;
Sophomores 30-59 semester hours; Juniors 60-89 semester
hours; Seniors 90 semester hours. |

2. What do I need to Apply? |
Applications for admission are evaluated on a regular
basis. When applying for admission, the applicant must
provide the following:
1. An application completed in full and a $25
non-refundable fee payable by check or money order.
2. Official transcripts from all colleges attended must
be submitted by the institution(s) to the
Office of Admissions.
3. High school transcripts and/or GED scores are
required for students who have less than 15 college
semester hours of credit to transfer.
Applicants who have attended one or more colleges or
universities and maintained a 2.0 grade point average on
a four point grading scale are considered for regular
transfer admissions. All transfer applicants must be in
good academic, financial, and social standing with all
previously attended institutions. |

3. Am I assigned an Advisor? |
| Every student enrolled at the University is assigned an
advisor in the academic department in which the student
has declared a major. The advisor will assist the
student in planning his/her course load, scheduling of
classes, identifying resource persons, and other
materials related to personal growth and development. |

4. Is Counseling
Available?
|
The Counseling Center offers direct assistance to
persons who are interested in broadening their knowledge about
themselves, their feelings, and/or their relationships. It provides
counseling for personal adjustment, social development, and
educational/career planning. The Center offers services on a
confidential basis at no charge to students, faculty, or staff.
The Center maintains a mini library of self-help
literature, filmstrips, and cassette tapes that deal with topics on
mental health, study habits, and career choice. Student growth seminars
also are held on a periodic basis. The Counseling Center Office is
located in room 309 of the University Center. |

6. Are Campus tours available?
|
| Yes.
Students interested in scheduling a campus tour should
contact the Admissions Office for an appointment Family
and individual tours are given on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday at 3:00 p.m. while school is in
session.

7. What are the guidelines for Transfer Credits? |
The admission staff will evaluate courses taken at other
institutions. Transfer credit is accepted for course
work with a grade of "C" or above from regionally
accredited institutions of higher learning. Academic
departments make the final determination of credits
accepted toward the chosen curriculum. All transfer
credit is evaluated at the time of initial enrollment. A
Certificate of Advanced Standing listing all credits
accepted by the University will be sent to the student.
The applicant must submit a copy of the advanced
standing to the advisor for review and approval.
Courses numbered 100-299 are considered lower level
elective (LL EL), and 300-599 are considered upper level
elective (UP EL).
Additional transfer credit may be obtained through
Advanced Placement Examinations, College Level
Examination Program (CLEP), American College Testing
Proficiency Examination Program (ACT-PEP), Norfolk State
University Subject Examinations, DANTES, Credit for
Military Service and Schools. See University catalog for

8. Do you have any type of orientation for Transfer Students?
|
| Admitted transfer students are invited to attend the
University orientation program prior to enrollment. This
one day program offered during the summer and fall
introduces the student to the campus and allows for
pre-registration to the University. |

9. Is financial aid available to transfer students? |
The purpose of the Norfolk State University Financial
Aid Program is to provide assistance to qualified
students who without such aid would be unable to attend.
Aid is awarded on the basis of need as determined
through the College Scholarship Service (CSS) and Pell
Grant Analysis.
Types of aid include scholarships, grants, loans and
employment. Applications and additional information may
be obtained at the Office of Student Financial Aid Room
130, H.B. Wilson Hall.
The University offers a number of awards each year to
qualified students who have been accepted for admission.
Some of these awards are only available to Virginia
residents, while others are given without regard to
state of residency.
A student must be enrolled at least half-time in a
degree program and in good academic standing to be
eligible for financial assistance. Certain programs may
require the student to maintain full-time status.
Students must reapply for aid each year. The deadline for applying for financial aid is
May 31 for
the ensuing academic year.
An entering student must be accepted for admission
before receiving an award regarding financial aid. To
apply for financial aid, new and currently enrolled
students must complete the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid. Transfer students must submit a Financial
Aid Transcript from previous colleges.

10. Is campus housing available to transfer students? Do I need to live on campus?
|
|
Residence halls for men and women are located on the
campus. Rooms are furnished with beds, closets, desks
and chairs. The dining halls, which are convenient to
residence halls, provide meals for students living on
campus.
The University also has an Off-Campus Housing referral
listing to aid students in finding privately owned
accommodations. For additional information, contact the
Director of Housing. (757-823-8407/8832). Every
effort is made to house all transfer students desiring
housing.
