How to Succeed in Hospitality

Learn the business basics or upgrade your skills

Employers are looking for people with industry-specific skills for management track positions. The GOING PLACES program provides industry-approved curricula developed by the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Motel Association and the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association. Courses of instruction are offered for those new to hospitality and tourism; those who wish to advance to first line or middle level management; and those who wish to continue their education at a college or university.

Instruction that's practical and lively

Classes are taught by industry professionals in college campus settings and are combined with paid internships or manager shadowing opportunities at Tidewater area employers. This on-the-job experience often leads to fulltime employment fro graduates.

"People skills" and high tech

To succeed, you'll need good work habits, a positive attitude and lots of "people skills," but you'll be rewarded with nearly limitless career opportunities. Computers and the Web play a huge role in the industry, so your online skills are a plus. Or, if you're new to computers, we'll provide the training to bring you up to speed. And remember, there is absolutely no cost to you for participation in this program.
