HBGI

Growing And Strengthening The Graduate Program In The College Of Science, Engineering And Technology (CSET)

  • The College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) at Norfolk State University (NSU) proposes to use Title III funds to grow and strengthen its five existing graduate programs; and develop at least two new graduate certificate programs and one Professional Science Masters Degree (PSM) Program. The first graduate program in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), the M.S. degree in Materials Science, was initiated at NSU in 1994. An HBGI grant was awarded to support the program in 1999. By 2007 this HBGI support for the Materials Science Program has developed a strong research base and lead to the development of a Ph.D. Program in Materials Science and Engineering. In August 2003 as a result of an Office of Civil Rights (OCR) agreement, the Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, and Optical Engineering Graduate Programs began. With the support of an HBGI project the student population of the Computer Science M.S. Program grew from 19 students to 58 students according to the most recent (Fall 2008) census. The HBGI funding has strengthened Computer Science and Materials Science Programs by the addition of new faculty, support staff, instructional equipment, and equipment maintenance funds. This new HBGI application will aim at leveraging these individual successes in a coordinated effort to further strengthen all five graduate programs in CSET, including the less mature engineering programs. Building on this success, the CSET further proposes the development of two new graduate certificate programs and one new Professional Science Masters Degree (PSM) Program. The new programs will provide alternative and more direct paths to getting greater numbers of minority students into STEM professions.

Title III funding makes it possible to provide student stipends, as well as, enhance graduate faculty, resources for laboratories, and other student support
