Exploring New Pathways


Norfolk State University was awarded funding from the National Association for Equal Opportunity In Higher Education (NAFEO) to implement a male mentoring program. The Techno-Scholars Program is designed to aid targeted male students become goal-oriented and community-conscious. This intervention is provided to inspire and prepare students for college and/or career success, thereby reducing their likelihood of falling prey to risk factors that affect African-American males.

A collaboration of learning communities and faith-based initiatives, this didactic model will employ technology via web-based portals, personal computers and community involvement to provide technical, academic, psychosocial support and mentoring.        Brochure

 

Mentoring

Techno-Scholar Academy

The Techno-Scholars Summer Academy for Academic Achievement, Social Development & Technology Exploration is an exciting two-week enrichment experience, which provides an opportunity for African American males throughout Hampton Roads, ages 10-12 who are entering the 5th through 7th grades, the opportunity to enhance their academic, technological and social maturity. The Summer Academy is an intense yet abridged experience designed similar to that of our year-round NAFEO/NSU Techno-Scholars program which serves Norfolk’s African American males from ages 12 to 16 years of age. Techno-Scholars participants will meet on-site at least five hours a week and/or via webcam and be matched with a Community Mentor whom they will interact with at least two times a week. Community Mentors will provide positive guidance, academic assistance, life skills & male development sessions, and chaperon social, cultural & educational field trips.

Career Professional Mentors will expose participants to their respective careers via workplace shadowing, panel discussions, career fairs and technical periodicals. Collegiate Mentors will provide academic tutoring, homework assistance and exposure to their respective technology studies & campus environments via collegiate classroom visits, related student programs and activities.      Learn More

 

How to Apply

To be considered for the Techno-Scholars Summer Academy, parents of prospective participants must submit a completed Registration Packet & Parent Survey; two (2) letter of recommendation forms; a copy of the student’s most recent report card and SOL scores; and pay registration fee either in-full, or required deposit and balance by prescribed dates. Acceptance into the Summer Academy will not be granted until all information is complete and appropriate fee payment is made. No cash or personal checks accepted. All money order payments must be made payable to the NSU Foundation - Urban Revitalization.
