Norfolk State to
Honor Norfolk 17
at President's Gala

Norfolk State University will honor the Norfolk 17 at the annual President’s Gala on Saturday, March 28 at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel located in downtown Norfolk. The Civil Rights icons will receive the university’s Forever Upward Award. It is the highest award bestowed by the Office of the President. The event will also feature the NSU presentation of the Distinguished Faculty Award and the induction of four alumni into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni.

Former NSU Sprinter Chris Brown to be Inducted into MEAC Hall of Fame

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced Monday that former Norfolk State sprinter Chris Brown is among five inductees into the 2009 class of the MEAC Hall of Fame.

Brown was a two-time track and field Division I All-American at Norfolk State (2000-01). Brown holds school records in the 400 meters, 500 meters, 4x400 meter and sprint medley relay events. He earned All-MEAC honors four times during the 2000-01 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons in the 200-meter and 400-meter events.

 Since embarking on his professional career, Brown won a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships and placed fourth in 2005 and 2007 in the 400 meters. Brown, a three-time Olympian for his native Bahamas, ran the anchor leg on the 4x400 meter Bahamian relay team that captured the silver medal at the 2008 summer games in Beijing, China. Brown also placed fourth in the 2008 Olympics in the individual 400.

 Joining Brown in this year’s class of inductees are former Delaware State running back Gene Lake, South Carolina State sports information director Bill Hamilton, Morgan State administrator Joseph McIver and broadcaster Charlie Neal.

The 2009 Hall of Fame Class will be enshrined on Thursday,
March 12, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the M.C. Benton, Jr. Convention Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. as part of the MEAC Basketball Tournament festivities.

Win Big in Maryland

The NSU men’s track team recently won its fourth consecutive MEAC Indoor Track &Field Championship, which was held at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.     [ more ]

 Norfolk State University Hosts Underground Railroad Symposium

Norfolk State University, the City of Norfolk and the Underground Railroad Freedom Network have teamed up to sponsor an Underground Railroad symposium titled,  Waterways to Freedom:  The Underground Railroad Journey from Hampton Roads, Virginia.
The symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 21 at the Spartan Suites Conference Room on the NSU campus.

Norfolk State to Host Scientific Honor Society Annual Meeting

Norfolk State University will serve as the lead host for the 66th Joint Annual Meeting for Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society and the National Institute of Science. The joint meeting, which is co-hosted by Hampton University, will be held March 24-28 at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Va.

NSU Planetarium
Celebrates the 2009
Year of Astronomy

The Norfolk State University planetarium will celebrate the 2009 Year of Astronomy by hosting a variety of presentations related to astronomy.  Free and open to the public, the presentations will be held on Thursdays at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. at the planetarium, which is located in the Woods Science Building, Room 119. Most shows last 30 minutes.

NSU Names 2008-2009
All-Academic Team
Norfolk State University recently recognized the 2008-2009 members of the Athletics All-Academic Team at the March 2 NSU vs. Howard University men’s basketball game, which was held at the Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall. More than 60 young men and women were inducted into the All-Academic Team.

NSU Center for Materials Research to Host NanoDays Educational Outreach Event at the Children’s Museum of Virginia 

Norfolk State University’s Center for Materials Research will host NanoDays, a unique, nanotechnology educational outreach event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 4 at the Children’s Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth.
