In an effort to reduce energy costs, reduce
fuel consumption for commuters, and lessen
the university’s carbon footprint on the
planet, Norfolk State University will
implement a 4-day work week, effective
Monday, May 11.

Commemorating the End of Massive

The 2009 Black History
Month celebration will focus on
commemorating the end of massive
resistance. The celebration will begin
with the annual Martin Luther King, Jr.
Commemorative Observance and Freedom
March on Thursday, January 15. Other
activities are as follows:
January 22
Panel
Discussion.
Old Guard/New Guard: Sharing
Perspectives on Civil Rights.
Moderated by Cathy Lewis from WHRO-TV
and WHRV-FM. L. Douglas Wilder
Performing Arts Center. Time: 8 to 10
p.m.
February 1-5
Drama.
Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.
Presented by the NSU Players. L. Douglas
Wilder Performing Arts Center. Time:
6 p.m. on Feb. 1 and 8 p.m. Feb. 2-5. Cost: Free for NSU students, faculty
and staff w/ID; $5 for students; and $10
for the general public. Tickets are
available at the NSU Ticket Center.

students must have a ticket.)

Alumni War Memorial Dedication

Norfolk
State University recently held an
Alumni War Memorial Dedication in
front of Joseph Echols Memorial
Hall. Sponsored by the Norfolk State
University Alumni Association, the
war memorial was dedicated in honor
of NSU alumni who valiantly gave
their lives in military conflicts.
The first four heroes memorialized
fought and died in the Vietnam War
are as follows:
MAJ Warren Goss,
CPT Alan Boffman, 2LT Linwood
Carter, Jr. and SGT Edward Williams.
James Edwards, Lynn Walton and
Edger Farmer, all of whom are NSU
alumni, spearheaded the efforts to
raise more than $10,000 to fund the
war memorial. Additionally, alumni,
family members and friends of the
veterans gathered to pay tribute.

NSU’s
School of Education Offers Two
Degree Programs in Martinsville,
Virginia

Norfolk State University’s School of
Education will offer two, four-year degree
programs to residents in the Martinsville,
Va. area. Starting in January, NSU will
offer a bachelor of science degree in early
childhood education (non-licensure) and a
bachelor of arts degree in psychology with
licensure in pre-kindergarten-3rd
grades (PK-3). The bachelor of arts
degree in PK-3 has an optional add-on
endorsement for three- and four-year olds.
