The Baccalaureate Social Work Program (BSW Program) is housed in The Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work. Our overarching goal is to prepare competent, professional social work practitioners who develop and deliver services that strengthen and/or empower individuals, families, groups, and communities, and to provide research, leadership and education for community wellness. At the baccalaureate level, we prepare generalist practitioners with the knowledge, skills, and values essential for professional social work practice with diverse populations in a myriad of settings.

The BSW Program comprises two phases: Pre-Social Work Education and Professional Social Work Education. Phase two, Professional Social Work Program, begins in the junior year and combines academic course work and a Field Practicum. The BSW Program has a defined, progressive, sequential curriculum grounded in Liberal Arts. The curriculum requirements include content on social work values and ethics, diversity, social and economic justice, populations-at-risk, human behavior and the social environment, social welfare policy and services, social work practice, research, and a professional practicum experience.

Students enrolled in the BSW Program are representative of diverse communities, both national and international. This diversity provides opportunities for students to experience and celebrate diversity, as they are prepared to practice in a global, multi-cultural community.

Opportunities to reach out and serve the community are fostered within the BSW Program. Each semester, students provide services to more than 200 agency and community sites through volunteering, service learning, practicum, and internships.

Graduates of the program are employed in a variety of private and public venues, such as hospitals, court systems, schools, community centers, nursing homes, and departments of human services. Also, many graduates continue their education by enrolling in graduate programs.  A dedicated faculty and staff work to ensure the success of students. Faculty contributes to research, grantsmanship, scholarship, and community service. In addition, selected faculty members provide consultation services to local social agencies and community groups.

The Baccalaureate Social Work degree is conferred on undergraduates who complete all the academic requirements of the program and of Norfolk State University. This degree is recognized as the first professional level of Social Work Practice. Criteria are established for admission to and continued matriculation in the Professional Program.
