NSU Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Awarded Grant from Youth Service of America to lead “Semester of Service” Project

   

January 11, 2011 – Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond, Director, NSU Service-Learning and Civic Program received a $1,000 award to launch a service-learning project that addresses Learning, Reading & Succeeding through Mentoring and Tutoring.

 

Funded by State Farm and allocated by YSA (Youth Service America), the project launched on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, January 17, honoring Dr. King’s call for social justice.

 

Students will also participate during the week of YSA Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17) with activities to alleviate Global Hunger.    Learn more

 

  

 

   
 

The NSU Service-Learning Program was established in 2003.  The goals of NSU Service-Learning are to:

  • Ensure a centralized process for planning, administering and assessing service-learning initiatives

  • Strengthen students' critical thinking and leadership skills as well as engage students in civic activities
  • Enhance faculty professional skills through on-campus workshops, teleconferences,  travel to professional meetings and scholarly research
  • Increase academic/community partnerships by identifying and addressing community needs

The program is designed to bring academic disciplines together in a collaborative effort to build successful student outcomes, by coordinating academically-based teaching, learning, and service opportunities within the community for civic engagement, career enhancement and intellectual growth. The office provides resources and opportunities for students and faculty to participate or attend workshops and conferences.

NSU Named to President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

   
 

Congratulations ! Norfolk State University was named to the second annual President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, Spring of 2008. The university received an official certificate recognizing its achievement for academic year 2007. Special acknowledgement goes to the NSU Service-Learning and Civic Engagement program, for submitting the information about the university’s service activities.

The certificate reads as follows: “The President of the United States of America hereby recognizes and congratulates Norfolk State University for the extraordinary and exemplary community service contributions of its students, faculty, and staff in meeting critical community and national needs.”

The award is sponsored by the Corporation for National Community Service, the U.S. Dept. of Education, the U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Posted by Communications and Marketing.
