Master of Arts in Teaching
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The MAT program requires that applicants must have:

Applicants must pass Praxis 1.
- An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and 2.75 in major
- Completed a NSU Graduate application
- Completed a Certificate of Preliminary Endorsement form which has been completed by an advisor
in he academic department of intended major
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Three Form Letters of Recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with applicant’s academic and professional background
- A copy of Teacher’s License
- A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.
Master of Arts in Urban Education Program
Master of Arts Subject Area Concentration (MASAC)
The MASAC program requires that applicants must have:
- An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- A minimum cumulative (GPA) of 2.75
- Completed an NSU Graduate application
- Completed a Certificate of Preliminary Endorsement form which has been completed by an advisor in the academic department of intended major
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Three Form Letters of Recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with applicant’s academic and professional background
- A copy of Teacher’s License
- A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.
Community Counseling (Agency) - Norfolk
Naval Station
The Agency-based Community Counseling program at the NOB (Naval Base) requires that applicants must have:
- An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- Completed an NSU Graduate application
- A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 or better
- Three Form Letters of Recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant’s academic and professional background
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.
School Counseling PreK-12
The School Counseling PreK-12 programs requires that applicants must have:
- An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- Completed an NSU graduate application
- A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 or better
- Three Form Letters of Recommendation from faculty or employers familiar with the applicant’s academic and professional background
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.
Administration and Supervision P-12
(Principal Preparation or Curriculum Development and Supervision)
The Administration and Supervision P-12 program requires that applicants must have:
- An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- Completed an NSU graduate application
- A minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75
- The candidates are expected to have three years of experience as certified teachers prior to admission (provisional licensure is not accepted)
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Three performance evaluation forms (to be filled out by P-12 school administrators)
- A copy of Teacher’s License
- A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.
GRADUATE NON-DEGREE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
This program requires that applicants must have:
- Passed PRAXIS I exam
- An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
- Completed an NSU Graduate Non-Degree application
- Three Form Letters of Recommendation from faculty or employers
- A minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75
- Completed a Certificate of Preliminary Endorsement from which has been completed by an advisor in the academic department of intended major
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
- A copy of Teacher’s License
- A personal statement of the applicant’s professional interests and goals.
Note: Requirements for Graduate Non-Degree strand of Principal
Preparation assumes the same requirements as the degree-seeking strand, with the exception of the application.
