Living
& Learning Communities (LLC)
General Program Description
The Office of Residence Life adheres to a belief
that student success on campus is maximized through
the guidance of personal and academic growth in a cooperative
living and learning environment which includes the utilization
of educational, recreational, and health and safety
themed programming. Our residential programs are designed
to increase student retention primarily through tutorial
programs, academic learning support initiatives, exposure
to career and leadership opportunities, and increased
awareness of the importance of community involvement.
Students are challenged to grow academically and personally
inside and outside of the classroom and residence hall.
Residential First
Year Experience (R-FYE) LLC
(On The Road To Success)
R-FYE
is
a program designed especially for Norfolk State University
freshman residents. This program is a component of the
university First Year Experience program that seeks
to enhance the learning that takes place in the classroom.
With the five focus areas of Diversity, Academics,
Social, African-American cultural heritage, and Mentorship,
R-FYE will provide a living and learning environment
where all residential first-year students can make a
successful transition from high school to college. By
encouraging this successful transition, the program
hopes to increase the freshman year to sophomore
year rate of retention.
ACADEMIC
The academic component requires R-FYE members
to participate in the ACCESS(Academy of Collegiate
Excellence for Student Success) tutorial program
for a minimum of one hour per week. |
 |
 |
SOCIAL
The social component facilitates and assists
students’ with the adjustment to college life.
R-FYE participants attend various campus events
as a group. Group activities include musicals,
theatre performances, intramural and varsity
athletic games, spiritual events, educational
programs, and events sponsored by Student Activities. |
MULTI-CULTURAL / AFRICAN-AMERICAN
CULTURAL HERITAGE
The multicultural component promotes cultural
awareness by encouraging and challenging participants
to be active citizens in their community. |
 |
MENTORSHIP
One
of the most effective ways to assist first-year students
with their transition from high school to college is
by partnering them with upper-class students. The mentoring
program provides opportunities for the R-FYE participants
to meet with mentors in a small group setting and individually.
These mentors are specially selected student leaders
who provide positive role models for the first-year
students.
The
R-FYE participants attend specially designed seminars,
programs, and events.
Additionally,
R-FYE participants are actively involved in the Residence
Hall Association (RHA), which helps foster
leadership skills and orient them to campus politics.
To encourage and establish professional habits
earlier, one day per month is designated for R-FYE
participants to dress professionally.
This
is accompanied by several introductory career seminars
sponsored by the Norfolk State University Career Services
Center and followed up with a university career day
symposium.
R-FYE participants
must demonstrate
outstanding leadership qualities, a patient temperament,
and exemplary levels of integrity.
The R-FYE program
is supervised
by the Residence Life & Housing Graduate Assistants
and administratively supervised by the Residence Life
Educator and the Assistant Director of Residence Life.
