Holiday/Winter Breaks Closing Tasks and Instructions

Thanksgiving Break

All residence halls will close at 12:00pm on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 for the Thanksgiving Break. All residents must make off-campus accommodations prior to this date. The halls will re-open for check-in at 10:00am on Sunday, November 29, 2009.

The dining halls will be closed after lunch on Wednesday, November 25th and will re-open for brunch on November 29th.

All students are expected to follow the sign-out procedures established for their residence hall. Residence Hall Coordinators/Graduate Assistants will inspect all rooms before students leave.

Failure to comply with the closing requests could result in judicial action and/or a charge to the student. We hope that you will enjoy your break. Please travel safely.
 


Winter Break

All residence halls will close at 2:00pm on Friday, December 11, 2009. For students participating in commencement activities, you must vacate your residence hall by 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 12th.
The residence halls will reopen for:
  • First-time and new transfer students – Wednesday, January 6th at 8:00 a.m.
  • Returning students – Friday, January 8th at 8:00 a.m.

Your Residence Hall Coordinator/Graduate Assistant will have instructions for completing and submitting the Intent to Return form for all residents who need housing for spring 2010 semester.

Please submit your form online by October 21, 2009 or you risk forfeiting your room for the spring 2010 semester.

If you are returning for spring 2010, follow the check out procedures, take your valuables home or properly secure them and turn in your key until you return.

If you do not need housing or if you have not completed the Intent to Return form for spring 2010, you must remove all of your belongings before you leave for winter break. You must also follow the check out procedures listed on this page.
 


Check Out Procedures (if you are not returning for the spring 2010 semester)

bullet You must inform your Residence Hall Coordinator/Graduate Assistant immediately.
bullet Remove all objects from walls, windows, closets, drawers, etc.
bullet Remove all personal belongings from the room/suite. The university does not assume responsibility for personal belongings left in the room/suite. We do not provide storage.
bullet Clean your room/suite. The room/suite should be cleaned upon departure. No trash or belongings should be left in the room/suite upon checkout.
bullet Dispose of all trash in the dumpster outside of the halls.
bullet Close and lock windows. Turn off lights and lock doors.
bullet TURN IN YOUR KEY.
 




Failure to complete any of the checkout procedures will result in a fine:


bullet $100.00 for not cleaning your side of the room/suite.
bullet $50.00 for improper checkout.
bullet $75.00 for not returning the key(s).

There is a $75 fee for utilizing residence halls as storage over the winter break and then moving out in January.
 

You will be charged accordingly for any broken furniture and for any missing items.

If you are not returning to housing for spring 2010, everything must be out of the room prior to check out inspection on December 11, 2009. Notify your Residence Hall Coordinator/Graduate Assistant if you are ready for your room inspection prior to December 11th.

If you wish to receive your mail, you must leave a forwarding address with the University Mail Room before leaving for Winter Break.

Closing Tasks
Clean your room prior to leaving.
1. Dispose of all food and please return any dining hall utensils you may have borrowed.
2.  Empty all wastebaskets in the outside dumpster.
3. Please do not leave any belongings in lounges bathrooms, laundry rooms or hallways.
4. Do not leave any articles on the outside window sills (this is a violation of the housing contract), and move any articles away from radiators.
5.  Please do not leave personal items on the floor.
6. Close and lock windows, leave the blinds down and open (unless you live on the first floor).
7. Remove or secure all valuables.
8.  Turn off all lights and heating units, unplug all electrical appliances (except refrigerators), leave the plugs visible.
