Residence Life & Housing

Residential Life Student Housing

Graduate Assistant Job Description

Each residence hall is supervised by a graduate student. These Graduate Assistants  (GAs) supervise and evaluate all of the RAs housed within their assigned residence hall(s) and are responsible for overseeing all social, cultural, recreational, and educational program administration within their assigned hall(s). GAs also provide student counseling follow-up, crisis and emergency assistance, conflict resolution, and mediation. Your GA is a great resource for talking through issues and/or problems you may experience while living in a residential environment.

The Graduate Assistant (GA) works in an assigned hall under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Residence Life. The role of the GA is to supervise the Resident Assistant staff in their assigned hall and to facilitate a community environment that promotes the educational experience of residential living. The GA articulates to residents the philosophy and policies of the Office of Residence Life & Housing and the University and, in turn, represents the needs of the students to the administration.

To qualify for a GA position, candidates must be a graduate student in a counseling, education, sociology, or related field of study with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, be a full-time degree seeking student at Norfolk State University or any university within a 30 mile radius, and possess some experience in a university residential setting and or supervision.
