Graduate Assistant Job Description
Each residence hall is supervised by a graduate
student. These Graduate Assistants (GAs) supervise and evaluate all of the RAs
housed within their assigned residence hall(s) and
are responsible for overseeing all social, cultural,
recreational, and educational program administration
within their assigned hall(s). GAs also provide
student counseling follow-up, crisis and emergency
assistance, conflict resolution, and mediation. Your
GA is a great resource for talking through issues
and/or problems you may experience while living in a
residential environment.
The Graduate
Assistant (GA) works in an assigned hall under the direct
supervision of the Assistant Director of Residence Life.
The role of the GA is to supervise the Resident Assistant
staff in their assigned hall and to facilitate a community
environment that promotes the educational experience
of residential living. The GA articulates to residents
the philosophy and policies of the Office of Residence
Life & Housing and the University and, in turn, represents
the needs of the students to the administration.
To qualify for a GA position, candidates must be
a graduate student in a counseling, education, sociology,
or related field of study with a cumulative grade point
average of at least 3.0, be a full-time degree seeking
student at Norfolk State University or any university
within a 30 mile radius, and possess some experience
in a university residential setting and or supervision.
