Campus Safety

The University does its best to make sure that your student is safe on campus. The Campus Police Department is a full service police agency which serves Norfolk State University community. Residence Halls receive the additional protection at night with (Spartan Escort).  Student can call the Campus Police Department.

Norfolk State University also works diligently to plan for campus and national emergencies. Emergency preparedness information is available online for students and parents.

The preferred method of transportation on campus is walking or bicycling. If your son or daughter brings a bike to campus, encourage him or her to register the bike with City Hall, purchase a "U-lock," and remember to lock the bike at all times. Bike racks are easily accessible at nearly every campus building. Norfolk State University also operates a free bus service for Norfolk State University community. Buses run approximately every 10 minutes during the Fall and Winter terms. Click here for the bus schedule.

Safety Tips

No university can guarantee the safety of its students. It is therefore recommended that students exercise caution at all times. It is recommended that students avoid isolated areas. (757) 823-8102 may be called to request Spartan escort services from dusk to dawn. Some important safety tips:

  1. Do not walk, jog, or bike alone unless in well-populated areas.
  2. Keep your room and apartment door locked at all times, whether or not you are present.
  3. All exterior doors should be kept locked.
  4. Do not allow others to "tailgate" into a secured building behind you.
  5. Contact Norfolk State University Police Department immediately, (757) 823-9000, in the event of any incident that threatens safety or appears suspicious.
  6. Become familiar with the locations of campus "Help" phones and use them if you need assistance of any kind.

Parking for students at Norfolk State University is extremely limited, and the University recommends that your son or daughter leave his or her car at home. There are many different types of transportation services available at Norfolk State University and within Norfolk, and students find that bringing cars to campus is not usually necessary. Students may ride Norfolk State University buses for free.

Freshmen are not eligible to apply for any parking permits offered through the Parking Services. Upperclassmen are eligible to apply for permits, but the demand exceeds the supply. In addition, most permits do not allow for "storage" parking (defined as leaving your vehicle continuously parked in a lot or structure for periods greater than 24 hours).

Due to the limited parking, students living in residence halls are strongly encouraged not to bring cars to campus. There is no permit parking adjacent to most of the residence halls. University Housing does offer a limited number of spaces to residents.

Students who travel by airplane to campus generally fly into Norfolk International Airport which is about 20 minutes from campus. There are several shuttles that run between The Norfolk International and Norfolk State University campus.

Students with mobility impairments can contact Services for Students with Disabilities for information about accessible campus transportation.
