10/31/07: “The Last Slaves
of Mississippi” Presentation A Huge Success Fall 2007
RLH Speakers Series Presentation
The Office of Residence Life & Housing and the NSU Honors
Program presented “The Last Slaves of Mississippi” as
a part of its annual speakers series. Moderated by Dr.
Khadijah Miller (Department Head, School of Interdisciplinary
Studies), the event focused on one family’s individual
fight for freedom almost a century after the Emancipation
Proclamation. The Wall family had no idea that slavery
had ended almost 96 years prior, when in 1961 they were
forced to leave the family who had enslaved them. Mae
(Wall) Miller broke her family’s silence when she attended
a church meeting in 2001 and realized that the lifestyle
her family had been forced to live was actually illegal.
Unfortunately, this story was not uncommon in the rural
South after the abolition of slavery.
Approximately 900 people listened to Mrs. Miller’s
life in peonage and learned about the research conducted
by noted genealogist, Antwanette Harrell. The Office
of Residence Life & Housing would like to thank all
faculty, staff, students and community members that
attended this exceptional event. For more information
about Mrs. Miller and her personal journey, please review
the following article (People Magazine, March
26, 2007):
http://v-103.com/pages/325891.php.
The event was free to the NSU community and made
possible with donations from Chickahominy Baptist Church,
the Office of Residence Life & Housing and the NSU Honors
Program.
