Project Title: The HBCU College
Project Model College Demonstration
Funds |
|
The goals of the HBCU College Project Model College Demonstration Funds
project is to educate the Norfolk State University campus community about cancer
prevention, detection, tobacco control advocacy, survivorship activities and
fund raising through Relay for Life.
The project’s specific objectives are to:
a. Significantly decrease the number of NSU students, faculty, and staff who
use tobacco. b. Get members of the campus community screened for early cancer
detection, thus enhancing survivability. c. Prevent cancer by education about
screening, lifestyle, diet, and family history influence. d. Organize an NSU
Relay for Life team. e. Make campus cancer survivors aware of ACS survivorship
activities and organizations like Man to Man, Look Good Feel Good and Road to
Recovery.
It is the challenge of this project to make the campus community more
aware of the effect of lifestyle (diet, exercise, tobacco use), family history,
screening, and cancer education and to use this knowledge to decrease cancer
incidence and mortality among the NSU family. Once general cancer awareness is
ingrained in the NSU community, it can be pyramided down to their families and
to the Hampton Roads community. The result will be a healthier community with
all of the enhanced quality of life, productivity, reduced health care expenses,
and advantages presented by a lower incidence of cancer.
