Project Title: Center for
Photonic Materials Research at Norfolk
State University |
|
The research program of the Center for Photonic Materials Research (CPMR)
focuses on integrated micro- and nano-structured materials with
organic/inorganic and dielectric/metal phases, and their unique nonlinear
optical, photovoltaic, and spin-related properties. This project takes advantage
of Norfolk State University’s established research strengths in the design,
synthesis, processing, and characterization of inorganic and organic optical and
magnetic materials. The prime educational goal of the Center is to increase the
number of underrepresented minority students trained in the field of photonics
and nanotechnology and to prepare them for positions of leadership in the
emerging areas of science and technology.
The Center has initiated and developed a Ph.D. Program in Materials Science
and Engineering built upon the strength of the existing M.S. Program in
Materials Science. The Center complements and strengthens the ongoing research
and educational projects at Norfolk State University in the key areas of
photonics, spintronics, and nanomaterials by enhancing the research potential of
existing faculty, providing capital equipment, student support resources, and
adding tenure track and research faculty. These improvements enable Norfolk
State University to permanently sustain the advanced materials research and
engineering activities.
