University Police
Message from the Chief
To the Norfolk State University Community, Visitors, and Friends:
The safety and well being of the University Community is the goal of the
Norfolk State University Police Department (NSUPD). We take pride in supporting
the academic excellence of students, as well as faculty and staff dedicated to
helping students achieve their goals. Accordingly, this 2005-2006 “Safety and
Campus Security Report” is intended to establish guidelines for safety and
security, as well as provide information on specific services and programs that
have been developed to encourage a safe campus environment.
This is an exciting time in the University’s history. As we embark upon the
new RISE Campus, a new police building, and the many other campus expansions and
improvements, we must employ new and improved ways to keep the campus safe. The
Police Department has developed a comprehensive plan that utilizes up to date
technology, in addition to continuing a supportive working relationship with the
City of Norfolk. This is in addition to our professional staff of NSUPD men and
women dedicated to keeping the campus safe.
The Norfolk State University Police Department was awarded three grants to
promote positive campus safety programs and relationships. The implementation of
these grants will enhance campus safety, as well as create positive programs:
1. Grant to Reduce Violent Crimes Against Women on Campus
- The grant to reduce violent crimes against women on campus provides
constructive and effective support for women who have experienced past or
recent sexual assault. A major goal of the program includes increasing the
delivery of victims’ assistance services on campus, as well as providing for
off-campus services.
- The grant also provides information, education, resources and awareness for
the entire campus community.
- Policies and protocols will be reviewed, assessed and/or
developed as appropriate, with informational resources and training extended
to neighborhoods that surround the campus.
- The entire campus community is encouraged to participate
in training that is designed to foster a positive campus environment.
2. Gang Prevention Grant
- The gang prevention grant, entitled,” Youth
Alternatives to Gang Activity (YAGA), assists statewide prevention efforts by
providing community awareness, and alternative youth programs in neighborhoods
that surround the campus.
3. Homeland Security Grant
- The Homeland Security
grant provides for establishing and enhancing campus safety operations. It
provides the necessary tools and protection needed to perform emergency tasks,
including the ability to communicate and respond as appropriate.
It is very
important to have supportive collaboration from each member of the University
family. By participating in safety and security awareness, each member of the
University can be alert for unusual or suspicious behaviors, and notify the
Police.
Your cooperation and support are critical, as we are an open educational
community where students, faculty and staff are on campus many hours of the day
and night. In its urban setting, the University shares many of the same safety
and security concerns as major metropolitan areas. It is for this reason that
all members of the community must take safety seriously.
Thank you in advance
for your participation in keeping our campus safe and secure.
