Campus Crime Alert

Campus Mail

The Norfolk State University Police Department issued a campus safety alert regarding heightened safety and security precautions in dealing with campus mail.

Typical characteristics of suspicious parcels or letters are: they are unexpected or from someone unfamiliar to you; are addressed to someone on longer with your organization or are otherwise outdated; have no return address, or have one that cannot be verified as legitimate; has an unusual weight, given its size or is lopsided or oddly shaped; marked with restrictive endorsements, such as personal or confidential; have protruding wires, strange odors or stains and display a city or state in the postmark that doesn't match the return address.

If you receive a suspicious parcel in the mail please follow these guidelines:

  • do not try to open the parcel! Isolate the parcel

  • evacuate the immediate area

  • call Norfolk State University Police Department at 823-8102 to report that you have received a suspicious parcel

  • do not handle the mail piece or package suspected of contamination and

  • make sure the damaged or suspicious packages are isolated and the immediate area is cordoned off.
