WHAT IT IS

Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing (www.nursingsociety.org ) provides the following definitions:

HONOR – a special esteem or respect – recognition or distinction
HONOR SOCIETY – a group established that recognizes colleagues’ academic and/or professional achievements. 

The mission of the NSU Honor Society is to provide leadership and scholarship in practice, education and research to enhance the health of people within the Hampton Roads community. The strategic vision of the society is to develop a substantial membership to be eligible for a Sigma Theta Tau charter.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

  •  Community service projects - Give back to your community through various service projects such as blood pressure screenings at a local mall and participation in local fundraisers.

  •  Continuing education - Attend special programs that may include continuing education on topics such as research, clinical practice, leadership development.
    • Networking - Interact with nurses at the local level who are mentors from whom you can learn, peers you can support and young nurses you can guide.

  •  Publications – Receive society newsletter that provides a forum for information and commentary.

MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

The society accepts two types of members, students and practicing nurses. While the society accepts students enrolled in either a baccalaureate or associate degree program, only baccalaureate prepared individuals will be able to transfer membership into the Sigma Theta Tau Chapter once formed.

Undergraduate students must:

  •  have completed ˝ of the nursing curriculum;

  •  have at least a GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 grading scale);

  •  rank in the upper 35th percentile of the graduating class;

  •  meet the expectation of academic integrity.

Nurse Leaders must:

  •  be a registered nurse, legally recognized to practice in his/her country;

  •  hold at least a baccalaureate degree in nursing or other field;

  •  have demonstrated achievement in nursing.

MEMBERSHIP FEES

$25 Induction fee & first year membership for students
$30 Induction fee & first year membership for nurses
$20 Annual membership fee for students (after 1st year)
$25 Annual membership fee for nurses (after 1st year)
$20 Annual 2nd membership fee for Sigma Theta members

All new members who attend the induction ceremony will be provided honor cords to wear at graduation and other cap & gown ceremonies.
