For high school students or college freshman with less than 30 credit hours:
The Navy offers two great scholarship programs: the Four-Year National Scholarship and the Historically Black College and University Scholarship (HBCU) and the Marine Corps Frederick C. Branch Scholarship . All of these scholarships cover four years of tuition and fees, a stipend for text books, and a $250 per academic month living allowance (which increases by $50 each year). Upon earning a bachelor's degree, both scholarships require a minimum of 5 years of Active Duty service in one of the following unrestricted line "Warfare Communities" below:
- Marines owe a minimum 4 year service commitment.
- Surface Warfare (Ships)
- Aviation (Pilot or Naval Flight Officer)
- Nuclear Power (Surface or Submarine)
- Special Operations (EOD)
- Special Warfare (SEALs)
- Nursing
There is no service obligation until you attend classes your sophomore year.
Minimum Requirements
The minimum SAT or ACT requirements for both The Four-Year National and the HBCU scholarships are the same:
- SAT: 1050 (520M/530V)
- ACT: 43 (21M/22V)
For the Marine Option Four-Year Scholarship the minimum requirements are:
- SAT: 1000
- ACT: 45
For students currently enrolled in college:
If you had applied for one of the scholarships and did not get accepted, or you are a
college freshman who would like to join the unit, there is the option of "walking-on" to
the NROTC program through the College Program. This is a non-scholarship route where you
participate with the unit, taking Naval Science courses and "Drill". After at least one
full semester of participation, a GPA greater than 2.5, and outstanding military bearing,
a package can be prepared to request an NROTC scholarship. If that request is granted
you will be entitled to the same benefits as the Four-Year and the HBCU scholarships.
If you are a transfer student with 30-60 credits and are interested in the unit, there are additional
scholarship opportunities available. Please contact one of the staff for more information regarding
these options.
A more complete description of the College Program and the application can be downloaded here.
For active duty Navy enlisted personnel:
See your Command Career Counselor for information on the STA-21 program.
Program Requirements
Whether you were accepted for a scholarship, or are participating through the College Program there are requirements for staying enrolled in the NROTC unit:
- Participate in physical training (PT) three to four times a week, generally in the morning.
- Maintain a minimum of "Good" per Navy Standards (PRT) of physical readiness in push-ups, curl-ups, and a 1.5 mile run.
- Be enrolled in Naval Science Drill, which takes place one morning a week.
- A minimum GPA of 2.0 must be maintained through-out your time in the program.
- Be where you have to be, when you have to be there.
To commission

The ultimate goal of the program is to gain a commission in either the US Navy or Marine Corps. To do so you must:
- Take at least two semesters of both University Level (Calculus based) Physics and Calculus (does not apply to Nursing Scholarships).
- Take four years of Naval Science courses (2 years for Nursing Scholarships).
- Take one semester of both a Cultural Awareness Study and a Military History course. Your advisor can provide you with a list of acceptable courses.
- Pass a pre-commissioning physical.
- Demonstrate proficiency in swimming (if you do not know how, you will be taught.)
- Complete the NROTC sailing program (consists of two written tests and an on-water practical test).
- Pass the Physical Readiness Test (PRT).
- Graduate.
